Is drinking alcohol a sin for a Christian?

There’s nothing wrong with drinking wine/beer but anything done in excess leads to sin because we must be alert in our minds to do God’s will. If we are drunk, we won’t have sound judgment (to know right from wrong) and be easily influenced by demons to sin against the Lord. Jesus turned water into wine so people can enjoy it, but one can take a blessing from the Lord and turn it into sin like drinking too much and getting drunk.

Another example of a blessing from God would be providing food for you and you take that blessing and start to live your life for food and become a glutton. The Lord gives us blessings which we must avoid turning it into something that becomes a sinful device because God gave us the right to decide right from wrong (free will).

1 Peter 5:8
Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.

The Greek word for sober-minded is néphó (nay’-fo) which means:

3525 nḗphō – properly, to be sober (not drunk), not intoxicated; (figuratively) free from illusion, i.e. from the intoxicating influences of sin (like the impact of selfish passion, greed, etc.).

3525 /nḗphō (“be sober, unintoxicated”) refers to having presence of mind (clear judgment), enabling someone to be temperate (self-controlled). 3525 /nḗphō (“uninfluenced by intoxicants”) means to have “one’s wits (faculties) about them,” which is the opposite of being irrational.

Satan is looking for Christians who are drunk with wine/beer so they can be an easy target to make them fall into sin and devour them. Our minds must be free from anything that would affect our judgment like alcohol and drugs so that by the Full Armor of God being sober minded, we can stand against Satan and his demonic forces with Jesus’ strength.

Proverbs 23:19-21
19 Listen, my son, and be wise; keep your mind on the right course. 20 Don’t associate with those who drink too much wine or with those who gorge themselves on meat. 21 For the drunkard and the glutton will become poor, and grogginess will clothe them in rags.

Ephesians 5:18
Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit,

Romans 13:13
Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy.
