1 Samuel 17:38-40
38 Then Saul had his own military clothes put on David. He put a bronze helmet on David’s head and had him put on armor. 39 David strapped his sword on over the military clothes and tried to walk, but he was not used to them. “I can’t walk in these,” David said to Saul, “I’m not used to them.” So David took them off. 40 Instead, he took his staff in his hand and chose five smooth stones from the wadi and put them in the pouch, in his shepherd’s bag. Then, with his sling in his hand, he approached the Philistine.
David tried to fight Goliath with Saul’s armor but when he tried to walk and move he knew that there was no way he was going to win with that. When we as Christians try to put on human armor relying on our own sufficiency, it won’t feel right in our Christian walk. That’s because no battle can be won through human effort but only by the Lord’s strength. David knew what it felt like putting on the full armor of God as stated in 1 Samuel 17:34-36 34 David answered Saul: “Your servant has been tending his father’s sheep. Whenever a lion or a bear came and carried off a lamb from the flock, 35 I went after it, struck it down, and rescued the lamb from its mouth. If it reared up against me, I would grab it by its fur, strike it down, and kill it. 36 Your servant has killed lions and bears; this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, for he has defied the armies of the living God.”.
In times of distress in your life, remember all those times that God has rescued you from your lion and bear that the enemy sent in your direction to destroy you but God was your armor and strength. When the enemy attacks, take note at the type of imagery described in the Bible about the enemy, mainly using predatory animals. You can see that the enemy we fight is stronger than we are that’s why it is very important to always of the full of armor of God on and that is done by reading the Bible daily and praying. When you do that, you will be walking in God’s will with His protection but if we neglect doing that, we can easily fall into sin and be out of God’s will, susceptible to any spiritual attack.
Why did he only take with him 5 smooth stones and a sling? That’s because he wanted to make it very obvious it wasn’t by his human strength that he was going to defeat Goliath but by God’s mighty right hand that brought Goliath to the ground. Satan can come at us with all types of weapons with his strength to destroy us but like this verse says 1 John 4:4 “You are from God, little children, and you have conquered them, because the One who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.”
Never fight your battles on your own but continue to trust in the Lord even though at times we doubt. Bring that doubt to the Lord and ask for forgiveness to strengthen your trust in Him and He will.
