Ponderings: Why do people ask for miracles?

thinking

There is one thing that I cannot understand;

Why do people demand a miracle from God so that they may believe? For an Atheist and Agnostic, they want God to show up at their front door proving that He exists.

The Bible is very clear that in Jesus’ days they witnessed countless miracles from Him and yet they still refused to believe in Him as their Messiah. Jesus Himself told them about Lazarus who went to Abraham’s side after death and the rich man after his death into Hades. The rich man wanted Lazarus to be a miracle to his brothers by resurrecting and showing himself to the rich man’s brothers, proving that there is such a place called Hades and those who reject the Lord God Almighty will end up in that terrible place. Abraham replied to the rich man in Luke 16:29-31, 29 “But Abraham said, ‘They have Moses and the prophets; they should listen to them.’ 30 “‘No, father Abraham,’ he said. ‘But if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’ 31 “But he told him, ‘If they don’t listen to Moses and the prophets, they will not be persuaded if someone rises from the dead.’”

We see that if a miracle occurs to someone who claims that seeing a miracle would convert them or make them believe, that would not be the case. By asking for a miracle to believe in Jesus, it only indicates their rejection of the Lord Jesus. If a person rejects God’s Word, no amount of miracles will ever convince them. What changes someone’s mind is Scripture which the Holy Spirit uses to convict the person from unbelief. A miracle cannot do that, unless the miracle points you to the scriptures or the miracle confirms the scriptures like in the case of Saul/Paul that Jesus is the Messiah.

The thing that I don’t understand is, if they have rejected Jesus/scripture, why even bother asking for something that would still not convince them?

  1. I believe the asking for a miracle is the modern day equivalent to what a certain man said to Jesus, “Let me go bury my father first” which was and still is a common ‘put off’ or excuse which everyone knew meant that the person was not truly interested. Today, we also call this ‘rhetoric’. Saying something for the sake of saying something but not having any interest at all. Jesus called those who seek a ‘sign’ a wicked and perverse generation. Of course, Jesus never did as they requested and neither should we even consider it. They GAVE their answer that they were not truly interested. We should just walk away and seek those that the Father is drawing to Jesus. Only His Spirit knows which ones they are and if we are being led by His Spirit, then He will bring us to them.

  2. They ask for it, because they know God will not provide it on the basis of their asking. Then, when the miracle doesn’t come, they can way “See? Told you that your God wasn’t real!”. They are building their own excuse into their very request.

    Just my two cents.

      1. Thanks brother. I don’t it you have been “blessed” by the attacks by the militant atheist crowd here, but it’s just like that with them, only the demand is proof…proof…proof…give me proof! Things never change.

      2. What puzzles me is if they are still not going to believe even if God gives them a miracle why waste their time in asking for one. I think personally is to prove the Christians that God doesn’t exist because they haven’t witness a miracle. They ask for a miracle knowing in their hearts that they don’t really want one so as to prove us wrong.

      3. Darn, my comment is missing a word LOL. Meant to say I don’t know if you have been.

And I think you may be on to something there. It’s all about finding reasons to reject God. Brother I don’t know your history in full, but I was 45 years old before I came to faith; I know quite a bit about the reasons people reject Jesus Christ.

      4. My pondering are not because I don’t know why but how can they after all God has revealed to them still reject Him. One time I was in prayer and praying I ask the Lord “Lord why do people reject you I mean, if someone is drowning and you come to help them why don’t they want it?” Wally, you know that God answered me immediately. Jesus responded and said, “It is because they don’t know that they are drowning.” I said, “WOW.” I became a Christian at 14 years old and I’m 40 now.

  3. Since I’ve spent time with the atheists and agnostics, I think I can safely say that many of them would believe in a god if there was proof but I don’t know too many who actually ask for miracles, that would be an oxymoron. (Those who do not believe in mystical things such as miracles asking for a miracle?)

What is your definition of miracle? For some it is someone whose heart is shocked back to life. To a friend of mine, who the medical field told her the chances of having a baby are slim, her “miracle” baby arrived two years later and another “miracle” baby two years after the first. So an atheist/agnostic is going to evaluate things a bit differently to others who attribute all life to a god. A Buddhist may attribute a miracle to ones karma…

Think for a moment, there are countless world religions and philosophies, many that you would consider “rejecting” Jesus but they still request “miracles” and believe miracles happen as a result of their god, goddess, higher power or happenstance. Christianity is one of the major religions but does not corner the market in miracles.

I judge people for the good they do, not for the differences we may have. Hopefully you may consider that.

    1. Thank you for your comment David. A miracle to be very basic is something that occurs that would be scientifically impossible or a situation that’s out of your control but changes to your good or someone else. I believe that other religions have miracles but where you and I part ways would be the source of those miracles. Satan has the power to perform things for people to deceive them through false miracles and wonders according to 2 Thessalonians 2. All religions can not be true. There’s only one truth….all teaches different ways to their paradise if I may say that. Jesus proved to be the Son of God through miracles but the most important one was His resurrection. You see David, some may die for a lie but no one and I mean no one would die for a lie that they themselves made up. If you make up a religion with a god that clearly doesn’t exist and you were told to stop preaching and believing in this god that you made up or else you will die. Do you think that the one who made it all up would die for something he knows completely is a lie?….of course not. The Apostles and those who witness the risen Lord Jesus Christ not who heard about but seen with their own eyes the Lord Jesus Christ, died as martyrs. A miracle or anything else without truth means nothing because it comes from darkness to deceive but a miracle that coincides with truth, that’s what matters because it comes from God who is truth. Jesus said I Am the Way the Truth and The Life, no one comes to the Father except through Me. There’s only one door into heaven not many. All roads cannot lead to the same god because they all contradict one another. Truth is absolute and can not change…. for an example: You bought a car and the color is red, can someone say that for them is orange? They have the right to believe that but you and I know full well, that it is red. Just because someone believes in something to be true sincerely only makes them sincerely wrong. Jesus Christ died on the cross and on the third day rose from the grave. Jesus is the only one who died and with His own powers rose Himself from the grave as He predicted. No one else can claim anything or even claim to be God but Jesus alone claimed to be God and proved it through His resurrection. You David, have the right to believe in the Truth or not that is your chose but I hope that you would read the Book of John found in the New Testament and let God’s Word speak to you.

      1. Since I am a student of theism, I don’t follow one particular religion. I have met so many wonderful people throughout my life, doing good deeds in the name of their religion (or philosophy) It is a shame that you think religions other than yours is the work of the devil.

Do you think you’re god wants you to speak divisively against other people? If so, you may want to research the religions that believe in the Abrahamic god. There are many paths to the top of the mountain.

      2. I believe in Truth. The problem with all paths leading to the top of that mountain is because, it is the wrong mountain. Jesus loves you David and died in your place so you won’t have to die spiritually but gave you a way out through faith in Jesus Christ. Jesus will forgive all of your sins if you place your faith and trust in His finished work on the cross. The wages of sin is death but eternal life is found in Jesus Christ alone. No other religion gives you the solution for your sins. No one can ever be good enough to wash their sins away. It would be like saying to a criminal that he is free because he started to do good deeds even though he committed a heinous crime. Do you think that a good judge will allow someone to go free just because the criminal started to do good deeds? Good deeds cannot erase the crime he committed, he has to pay for his crimes. God is a righteous Judge and He cannot let go of the sins in your life without punishing you. Jesus came and took your punishment upon Himself so that you may be forgiven by faith in Jesus Christ. Your sins was paid in full on the cross and that could be extended to you if you believe in Jesus as Lord and savior.

      3. My reference to different paths up the mountain was made by a Christian who was speaking of the different sects of Christianity. So which sect is the correct one? While I am on the topic, do you think the Judea religion is a false religion?

      4. I appreciate your questions David…my answers to your questions are not an attack on your person. My answers is to clarify misinterpretations.
The Christian gave a very bad analogy. You misunderstand Christianity, we are all one in Christ. sects like you call it would be Jehovah Witness or Mormonism who claim to be Christians but deny Jesus as God which would make them a false religion. Any Christian denomination who believes in the fundamental of the faith which would be for an example: Jesus born from a virgin, Jesus as the Son of God, His death and resurrection, salvation by faith alone in Jesus alone…etc. Anyone who deviates from these which are essential to salvation is a false Christian. Judaism is a false religion because they deny the only way to God the Father which is Jesus Christ. Any religion that denies Jesus as the only way to heaven according to John 14:6 is false.

  4. David, all the other religions of the world, including those you have witnessed, do what they do to EARN their way to heaven. They believe in a deity which ‘requires’ those works. The difference is really simple. The God of the Christians has GIVEN free access to heaven through FAITH in His Son, Jesus the Christ.

In the other religions, you never know for certain how much or how many good deeds are required. With Jesus, this uncertainty is never an issue as when you believe in Him, you are ‘born again’ by God’s Spirit and afterward, you have an ‘inner witness’ of His Spirit, confirming your approval of God.

Someone GIVES you eternal life as a gift with an internal witness that confirms this promise versus someone requiring an unknown measure of works to receive eternal life with NO internal personal witness to confirm their promise. Which would YOU choose?

Most religions require NO HEART CHANGE but will allow you to walk according to your own terms. With Jesus, there comes a heart change which works to change your mind and your motivations to a more perfect love. Sadly, there are many forms of a “false” Christianity that has sprung up over the years with most being a poor “counterfeit” and not reflective of the “real” faith. They “name” the name but have never entered into God’s kingdom through a faith that puts an end to selfish desires. You see, it is this root of selfishness that ‘bars’ the way to true enlightenment. Many religions teach you how to ‘manage’ this with a wide variety of methods, rules and doctrines. Only in true Christianity is the heart and motivations of the heart so changed that there is no ‘management’ required to ‘control the natural appetites’. Jesus removes them by giving to us a NEW HEART with NEW MOTIVATIONS, that is, HIS HEART.

Yes, there are those whose ‘works’ are commendable but it is not the way God has given. Most of them believe in God but do not want to live their lives according to His commandments. His commandments are all above love, first to love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind, soul and strength and then to love one another as you would be loved. With Jesus, He gave His disciples a new commandment, to love one another as He loved them. This is a higher form of love, called in the Greek “agape” or a God-kind of love which is a purely unselfish love, never taking into account one’s own needs but rather the needs of others.

We all use one form of currency or another and in each country with their unique form of currency, there is always a battle to remove the counterfeit forms of currency which are not the standard adopted by that country. The counterfeit LOOKS like the real thing, feels like the real thing and for those who cannot tell the difference, spends like the real thing but it is a counterfeit. Would you prefer to use the counterfeit or the real thing, always fearful that your use of the counterfeit would be discovered and you arrested and prosecuted? With so many religions in the world, do you suppose that some may actually be ‘counterfeits’ of the original? For those not willing to accept that “gift” God is giving, alternatives will always present themselves. Jesus addressed this issue when He was on the earth. He called them ‘thieves’ and want to enter some other way than they way provided. Which other religion speaks so clearly of this warning. This is not the only thing Jesus spoke of but when He said that there is no other way to come to the Father except through Himself, THIS puts it as clearly as possible.

Other religions will strongly disagree with this but NONE of them have the proof of what Jesus both said and did. None of them have their ‘savior’ as rising from the dead, after being murdered AND being seen by as many as 500 at one time. Jesus was seen, felt, and heard by many for 40 days after His resurrection and those disciples of His are witnesses of this event. Which other religion has this testimony?

  5. David, you said:
“My reference to different paths up the mountain was made by a Christian who was speaking of the different sects of Christianity. So which sect is the correct one? While I am on the topic, do you think the Judea religion is a false religion?”

One thing that will clear up any confusion regarding which ‘sect’ is the right one, is:

John 8:32 NKJV And you shall know the TRUTH, and the TRUTH shall make you free.”

Since Jesus said that He is the Way, the TRUTH and the Life, faith in Him will introduce you to the living Truth and the Holy Spirit, who was given for this purpose: to lead and guide us into ALL truth. Anyone who loves the Truth and chooses to walk in the Truth, will be satisfied by the Holy Spirit’s guidance and teaching. Anyone NOT led and taught of the Holy Spirit, cannot know the truth with the result being confusion and every evil thing…

James 3:16 AMPC For wherever there is jealousy (envy) and contention (rivalry and selfish ambition), there will also be confusion (unrest, disharmony, rebellion) and all sorts of evil and vile practices.

If we walk in the wisdom from above, we will not be caught up in those conflicts of religion where one strives to be better than the other and proclaiming themselves so.

James 3:17 AMPC But the wisdom from above is first of all pure (undefiled); then it is peace-loving, courteous (considerate, gentle). [It is willing to] yield to reason, full of compassion and good fruits; it is wholehearted and straightforward, impartial and unfeigned (free from doubts, wavering, and insincerity).

Strife does not come from Jesus nor those who walk with Him but strife comes from those who refuse to yield themselves wholly to the Spirit of the Lord and His Voice. Refusing the Holy Spirit, opens one to this strife and confusion as verse 16 states because any time there is selfishness in any form, confusion and evil will arise.

So, in the end, only those with a living relationship with their Savior, as evidenced by their walking in love and seeking His wisdom in all things, will KNOW the Truth for the Truth has a first name and His name is SAVIOR (Yeshua).

Seek a living relationship with Jesus and He will guide you to what is the Truth and in knowing that Truth, you will be made free from all confusion. It is not which ‘sect’ is the right one, it is which relationship is the right one. God is calling us to Himself and not to a religious organization or sect.
