13 Go and learn what this means: I desire mercy and not sacrifice. For I didn’t come to call the righteous, but sinners.”
God’s desire is to show mercy to the sinner by convicting him of his sins so he can repent and turn to the Lord in faith and show him mercy. The Lord Jesus wants us to have the same attitude towards the unbelievers. How can you please the Lord by doing His will and at the same time breaking it by having no pity on the lost? Jesus was alluding to the Hosea 6:6 passage that says, “For I desire loyalty and not sacrifice, the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.”
Jesus wants sinners to repent and believe in Him so that their love for the Lord can be expressed through loyalty by having an intimate relationship with Jesus Christ through knowing His Word and living by it. The Lord will not be pleased with a Christian who goes to church, helps those in need but at the same time, doesn’t take the time to know Jesus through the Word of God. The latter has to be priority without leaving the former undone.
