God’s Patience Is Long Suffering

Before God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah He sent them Lot so that they could know Him and repent through witnessing Lot’s life according to 1 Peter 2:12 which says, Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.

Genesis 13:10-13

10 Lot looked around and saw that the whole plain of the Jordan toward Zoar was well watered, like the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt. (This was before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.) 11 So Lot chose for himself the whole plain of the Jordan and set out toward the east. The two men parted company: 12 Abram lived in the land of Canaan, while Lot lived among the cities of the plain and pitched his tents near Sodom. 13 Now the people of Sodom were wicked and were sinning greatly against the Lord.

The LORD told Abraham that He was going to give his descendants the land of Canaan but it was going to take 400 years until the fullness of the Canaanites’ wickedness was completed, showing how merciful God really was. God was giving them a chance to repent, sending them a priest (Melchizedek), a prophet (Abraham) and a righteous man (Lot).

  • Melchizedek a Priest: (Genesis 14: 17-20) 17 After Abram returned from defeating Kedorlaomer and the kings allied with him, the king of Sodom came out to meet him in the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the King’s Valley). 18 Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. He was priest of God Most High, 19 and he blessed Abram, saying, “Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth. 20 And praise be to God Most High, who delivered your enemies into your hand. ”Then Abram gave him a tenth of everything.
  • Abraham a Prophet: (Genesis 20:7) Now return the man’s wife, for he is a prophet, and he will pray for you and you will live. But if you do not return her, you may be sure that you and all who belong to you will die.”

  • Lot a righteous man: (2 Peter 2:7-8) 7 and if he rescued Lot, a righteous man, who was distressed by the depraved conduct of the lawless 8 (for that righteous man, living among them day after day, was tormented in his righteous soul by the lawless deeds he saw and heard)

We will see the Canaanites’ abominable way of living that came before the throne of God and His wrath was set in motion to punish their sins but before He would do this. He gave them 400 years to repent by sending them men of God.

400 years of mercy:

Genesis 15:12-16

12 As the sun was setting, Abram fell into a deep sleep, and a thick and dreadful darkness came over him. 13 Then the Lord said to him, “Know for certain that for four hundred years your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own and that they will be enslaved and mistreated there. 14 But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves, and afterward they will come out with great possessions. 15 You, however, will go to your ancestors in peace and be buried at a good old age. 16 In the fourth generation your descendants will come back here, for the sin of the Amorites has not yet reached its full measure.”

The practices of the Canaanites:

  • Witchcraft

Deuteronomy 18:9-13
9 When you enter the land the Lord your God is giving you, do not learn to imitate the detestable ways of the nations there. 10 Let no one be found among you who sacrifices their son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, 11 or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. 12 Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord; because of these same detestable practices the Lord your God will drive out those nations before you. 13 You must be blameless before the Lord your God

  • Bestiality

Deuteronomy 27:21
“Cursed is anyone who has sexual relations with any animal.” Then all the people shall say, “Amen!”

  • Child sacrifice

Deuteronomy 12:31
You must not worship the Lord your God in their way, because in worshiping their gods, they do all kinds of detestable things the Lord hates. They even burn their sons and daughters in the fire as sacrifices to their gods.

  • Idolatry

Deuteronomy 7:24-25
24 He will give their kings into your hand, and you will wipe out their names from under heaven. No one will be able to stand up against you; you will destroy them. 25 The images of their gods you are to burn in the fire. Do not covet the silver and gold on them, and do not take it for yourselves, or you will be ensnared by it, for it is detestable to the Lord your God.

  • Homosexuality

Genesis 19:4
Before they had gone to bed, all the men from every part of the city of Sodom—both young and old—surrounded the house. 5 They called to Lot, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so that we can have sex with them.”

Despite all of their awful sins and killings, God shows them mercy by giving them time to repent. If you have not made Jesus Christ your Lord and Savior, remember He is giving you time to repent. Don’t delay before it’s too late. Jesus loves you and wants a personal relationship with you. Believe that He died for your sins was buried and on the third day rose from the grave in victory. If you place your faith in Him, committing your life to God’s Word and believe what He did for you, He will give you eternal life.
