Mark 11:12-14
12 The next day when they came out from Bethany, He was hungry. 13 After seeing in the distance a fig tree with leaves, He went to find out if there was anything on it. When He came to it, He found nothing but leaves, because it was not the season for figs. 14 He said to it, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again!” And His disciples heard it.
Hungry is someone with a strong desire to be satisfied. Why was Jesus angry at the fig tree when it was not the season for it to produce fruit? Jesus was making a point that those who claim to follow the Lord must always be producing fruits regardless the season which we are in. The fig tree was Israel, those who follow the Living God but Jesus was disappointed because the Pharisees and Sadducees added to the Word of God with their traditions and making it hard for the people to produce fruits, for an example:
Matthew 15:1-9 which says,
Then Pharisees and scribes came from Jerusalem to Jesus and asked, 2 “Why do Your disciples break the tradition of the elders? For they don’t wash their hands when they eat!”
3 He answered them, “And why do you break God’s commandment because of your tradition? 4 For God said:
Honor your father and your mother; and,
The one who speaks evil of father or mother
must be put to death.
5 But you say, ‘Whoever tells his father or mother, “Whatever benefit you might have received from me is a gift committed to the temple”— 6 he does not have to honor his father.’ In this way, you have revoked God’s word because of your tradition. 7 Hypocrites! Isaiah prophesied correctly about you when he said:
8 These people honor Me with their lips,
but their heart is far from Me.
9 They worship Me in vain,
teaching as doctrines the commands of men.”
Jesus desires that we bear fruits because it brings people to Him who in turn would honor and bring Him glory. Producing fruits also means that we are like Jesus, walking according to His Word and participating in His will. Those who refuse to do God’s will by producing fruits show that they never had a relationship with Him and they will eventually be rejected by Jesus. A true Christian will want to produce fruits and show that he/she has the Holy Spirit living inside of them as seen in John 15:7-8,16 and Philippians 2:13 which says,
John 15:7-8,16
7 If you remain in Me and My words remain in you, ask whatever you want and it will be done for you. 8 My Father is glorified by this: that you produce much fruit and prove to be My disciples.
16 You did not choose Me, but I chose you. I appointed you that you should go out and produce fruit and that your fruit should remain, so that whatever you ask the Father in My name, He will give you.
Philippians 2:13
13 For it is God who is working in you, enabling you both to desire and to work out His good purpose.
