Is The Truth A Person?

Basic RGB

Some Christians are teaching that “the truth is a person,” Jesus Christ. They say this because of John 14:6 which says, 6 Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

That term “the truth is a person” translating it like that from the verse above is very bizarre because you will have a lot of inconsistencies using that logic and method when trying to exegete a passage. For an example: Jesus also said in John 10:7 Therefore Jesus said again, “Very truly I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. Now, let’s use the same logic and method to interpret that verse, “the gate is a person.” As we can see, that type of logic will keep someone from learning the meaning of scripture. When Jesus in John 14:6 says that He is the truth, He does not say that the truth is a person because when interpreting other passages as you can see, it won’t make any sense using that method. We must let scripture interpret scripture.

John 8:28-32,39-41

26 “I have much to say in judgment of you. But he who sent me is trustworthy, and what I have heard from him I tell the world.”
27 They did not understand that he was telling them about his Father. 28 So Jesus said, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he and that I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me. 29 The one who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, for I always do what pleases him.” 30 Even as he spoke, many believed in him.
31 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

39 “Abraham is our father,” they answered.

“If you were Abraham’s children,” said Jesus, “then you would do what Abraham did. 40 As it is, you are looking for a way to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham did not do such things. 41 You are doing the works of your own father.”

The Truth is associated with the message which is the good news about Jesus Christ.

John 18:37

37 “You are a king, then!” said Pilate.
Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.”

Jesus came to testify to The Truth about Himself through His message which is contained in the New Testament and the Old Testament pointed to.

Jesus came to reveal God the Father to the world and His relationship to the Father as God the Son and how a person can get to the Father. Truth also means reality, what is and what will be. Jesus is The Truth and there is no lie found in Him according to John 8:46 which says, Can any of you prove me guilty of sin? If I am telling the truth, why don’t you believe me?

Jesus is The Truth meaning that His nature, character, and message is The Truth. That He alone is the originator and standard of The Truth and it cannot be obtained anywhere else but through Jesus Christ alone.

The danger in the phrase “the truth is a person” can come about that they will say, “all you need to do is follow Jesus, not the Bible” (since the truth is a person). In a subtle way, the enemy wants to make people drift away from scripture. Once a person drifts away from holy scripture then they start to follow a different Jesus. People naturally speaking don’t like following rules like the Bible because it tells you what to do and what not to do.

All of these phrases are synonyms: Jesus is the Word, the truth, the light, the way and the life. All these words describe the person of Jesus, who really is the only way to heaven who alone can give you eternal life through faith in Him.

The Truth is found in Jesus Christ through His Word. Jesus and the Word of God are two sides of the same coin. You can’t have one without the other as seen in John 15:7-8 which says, 7 If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8 This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.

To remain in Jesus is by obeying the Word of God.

The words that Jesus spoke are the very words of God. Satan is trying to make you separate Jesus from the written Word by making them think, “as long as you have Jesus you don’t need to read or rely on the Bible.”

John 12:49-50

49 For I did not speak on my own, but the Father who sent me commanded me to say all that I have spoken. 50 I know that his command leads to eternal life. So whatever I say is just what the Father has told me to say.”

The message of the gospel leads to Jesus Christ who gives eternal life.

  1. I first heard this from someone here on WP and to be honest, I was taken aback. I would not be surprised if by the same logic, I suppose one who states that the truth is a person might also posit a lie is a person which we know to make no sense whatsoever.

Jesus himself called Satan “the father of lies” in John 8:44. And what you have stated “That He alone is the originator and standard of The Truth and it cannot be obtained anywhere else but through Jesus Christ alone” makes the interpretation of John 14:6 make more sense for everything that proceeds out of His mouth is nothing but the truth, but to apply this “truth is a person” statement in general apart from Jesus makes absolutely no sense and is used to legitimize any thought or interpretation which contradict Scripture with these people claiming since they believe in Jesus, they no longer need the doctrines contained in Scripture which were written and prescribed that we may live according to God’s will.

    1. That’s exactly what I think. By saying that the truth is a person is insinuating that there’s no need for the Book (holy scripture) but live like Jesus even though that cannot be done apart from the Bible. This logic is seen through a guy who’s initials are JA who says he believes in Jesus but rejects the Bible.

      1. HI Spaniard,

JA here. You misinterpret me. I don’t reject the bible, but I do reject Fundamentalism. What I reject is the Fundamentalist god, not God who is compassion, healing-mercy and loving-kindness.

Jesus is the Word of God and normative human person. The bible is not the Word of God but a fallible, human witness to the Word of God. You worship the Word of God . To worship the bible is to commit bibliolatry.

The true Christians are the progressive liberal Christians, not the Fundamentalists. By viewing the Word of God as a person, and not a book, is the only way to prevent the idolatry of bible worship. The problem is the bible, not the person to whom the bible bears fallible testimony.

      2. John Arthur said-“The problem is the bible, not the person to whom the bible bears fallible testimony.”

John Arthur says the problem is the Bible of course it is to the deceived. Man, I hit it on the nose, your comment strengthened my point, thank you JA.

Thank you for proving my point in what I just said in my post. You cults are exactly what Satan is convincing you guys to do. To separate the Bible from Jesus thus giving you a Jesus that’s foreign to holy scripture which is a demon masquerading as the Lord and deceiving you, JA (John Arthur) and all the liberals who are already deceived are now being used to deceived others which is why you are here. Your mission with me is futile. There is no way you are going to deceive me because I got on the full armor of God.

This is the funniest thing that I ever read, you said-“JA here. You misinterpret me. I don’t reject the bible”

And then you turn around and say this, “The problem is the bible, not the person to whom the bible bears fallible testimony.”

Cults have no choice but to contradict themselves because they are trying to be someone they are not to deceive a Christian but with that type of logic I doubt it if this deceiver will get far.

John Arthur, you know why you have it backwards, God and Satan, it is because YOU don’t know the Bible that’s why you reject the real Jesus Christ.

You cults have one thing in common, rejection of holy scripture which is a rejection of Jesus who saves.

      1. Hi Spaniard,

Thank you for your kind replies. The reason I thought you had deleted my comments were that they were no longer showing that they were awaiting moderation. Then after I wrote the above comment, you placed the comment back on awaiting moderation. Prior to writing the comment above, I genuinely thought that you had deleted it as you have with several of my comments on other posts. e.g. you didn’t answer my comment relating to Bart Ehrman or Bruce Gerencser on a previous article of yours. So thanks for responding.

You seem to imply that Jesus and the bible are exactly the same. You would agree that Jesus is a person and that the bible is not a person but a book. You would also agree that Christians are meant to give supreme worth to Jesus and not to the bible. God has put his word above his name, but this does not mean that he has put the bible above himself. Do you mean to tell me that the bible is above Jesus (surely not) or equal to Jesus (surely not) for then we would have a holy quadrangle and not a triune God?

I apologise to you if you think I might have a little upset with you. But remember, you did point to me in your comments and I thought you were not allowing me to answer.

Peace and well being to you.

      2. The holy scriptures reveal the person of Jesus Christ. The Bible is the same as Jesus because without it you cannot know the Lord. Jesus’ titles: The Word, The Word of God and The Truth. The only way to know the truth is through the Word of God or else you will make up your own twisted Jesus.

I’ve heard ‘Truth is a Person’ before but didn’t realize that it goes hand-in-hand with believing the Bible ‘contains errors’ – thank you!

    You wrote:

“In a subtle way, the enemy wants to make people drift away from scripture. Once a person drifts away from holy scripture then they start to follow a different Jesus.”

This is very true. This particular lie that ‘the Truth is a Person’ is subtle and so very dangerous. The opposite side of its coin is the heresy that the Bible is fallible, or as the Enemy wants us to think, “the bible lies.”

    Lord bless you!

    1. The first time I heard that phrase it gave me a headache because it was so weird and I was trying to fit it into Biblical theology but it just wouldn’t make any sense. I just let other passages interpret John 14:6 for me. I understand that those who believe that phrase seem to reject the Bible.

      1. The same ones who assert and believe “The Bible is not true because it reduces God to paper.”

I’m curious how a proponent of this concept will reconcile Jesus’ own words, “If you remain in me and my words remain in you…” Without knowing what is written, how can we remain and abide in Him exactly? Through the prompting of the Holy Spirit? and without knowing Scriptures, how exactly can we differentiate whose “Spirit” is leading us? Unless these people rely solely on extrabiblical revelations which would be the case.

While it is possible the Holy Spirit can enlighten us in matters we have no prior knowledge of, it is something that will always align and not contradict what is written, otherwise it is not of God.

      2. That’s the deception, it can only happen if the person’s reliance of holy scripture is taken away. If you cannot take him/her away from scripture then deception is harder to put into motion.

  4. Hi Spaniard,

Jesus was a humanist and , in some respects, way ahead of his times. Being a Jew, he naturally was a theistic humanist and in this respect his theism was a product of his times. As the great humanist, Richard Dawkins, put it, although Jesus was ahead of his times on many issues he was behind the times.

If you can spend time breathing deeply and listening in the silence, you will discover a presence of peace and compassion. This is the way: peace and compassion and it is the way Jesus and Buddha subscribed to.

    1. This is by far the worst explanation about who Jesus is that I ever heard. You are so false that a Christian can spot you miles away. To say that Jesus was a humanist is the most stupidest thing that I ever heard. Jesus taught people to believe in the true God, His Father.

      1. Hi Spaniard,

Wikipedia sys this about Christian humanism.

” Christian humanism emphasizes the humanity of Jesus and his propensity to synthesize human spirituality and materialism. It regards humanist principles like universal human dignity and individual freedom and the primacy of human happiness as essential and principal components of or at least compatible with the teachings of Jesus.”

You can only love God whom you have not seen if you love others whom you have seen, and this includes the enemy. Compassion, healing-mercy and loving-kindness are at the heart and centre of Jesus’ teachings and his work.

Isn’t Fundamentalism a form of heresy? Isn’t Jesus a person who is a way-shower, much like Buddha? Are not the numerous and various Fundamentalist teachings and ethical practices at odds with Jesus?

      2. You can quote from all the sources you like but at the end it is the Word of God what’s authoritative. Humanism has a different meaning in today’s world. You John need to define Jesus as the scripture defines Him. John 1:1 Jesus is God, God came to earth in the person of Jesus Christ. He came with a human body to die in our place on the cross because if Jesus would have come in His glorified body He couldn’t die so He put on a body like ours to die for our sins. You are a false teacher that’s trying to deceive me or my readers. You have no part in God, John A.

  5. Hi Spaniard,

Creative love theism is a theology that is centred on God’s nature as unconditional, others-centred, self-giving community-forming and life-affirming compassion, healing-mercy and loving-kindness. This is God’s nature and all the classical attributes of God need to be re-thought in this framework, otherwise you end up with a violent god and a gospel filled with violent implications which contradicts the lowly suffering servant from Nazareth in Galilee.

Since God is a personal, relational and social being (if he exists), then The Truth (religious truth) is a person and NOT a book. This is the fata mistake that Fundamentalism makes. it equate the book and the person.

Any reading of the book can see that it is saturated with violence and violent implications and a god of violence which contradicts the view that Jesus is the Prince of Peace. So who has God: the Fundamentalist who believes in a god of violence or the liberal Christian and Christian humanist who is a peacemaker?

Remember, if you hold to a god of violence how is it possible to treat our enemies with dignity and respect. God doesn’t need Fundamentalists to defend him does he? Can’t God defend himself/herself? And how is a gospel of violence really “god” news? Aren’t you confusing the good news with the bad news?

    Shalom,

    John Arthur

    1. The God of the Bible is not a God of violence but a God of justice and judgments. We see this in Jesus Christ-see verses below. You have made-up a god in your made John Arthur that doesn’t exist. Your god is a fable.

      2 Timothy 4:1
I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of His appearing and His kingdom:

      Revelation 20:11-15
11 Then I saw a great white throne and One seated on it. Earth and heaven fled from His presence, and no place was found for them. 12 I also saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life, and the dead were judged according to their works by what was written in the books.

13 Then the sea gave up its dead, and Death and Hades gave up their dead; all were judged according to their works. 14 Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. 15 And anyone not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire.

John Arthur, you need to take your head out of the sand and actually read the Bible for once because you have no idea what you’re talking about.

      1. Hi Spaniard,

When god is alleged (by the Israelite power elite) to have commanded the Israelites to put to the sword whole cities, including little children and innocent babies then to burn these cities to the ground, isn’t this a justification of their appalling actions (“God told us”)? You may call this god’s judgment but, if this is the true God, isn’t it an appalling example of atrocities committed in the name of god.

Do you mean to tell me that God commanded the murder of little babies because of what their parents had done? Do you mean to whitewash this as god’s judgment and not an act of unspeakable violence? Do you mean to tell me that Jesus would have supported this? Maybe, it is you that needs to read the bible and read it critically, not gullibly.

      2. You and truth have nothing in common or know each other John because to say that God murders is by far the strangest thing that I ever heard.

God created all living things, He alone can bring death to a person through judgment or bring to life through His mercy.

Let me ask you a question? Did the Americans in WWII murdered the Nazis or killed them for their crime against humanity. No one in their right mind would say that about the Americans but when God the creator of the universe puts someone to death you call Him a murderer…really?

The Canaanite’s who God put to death through the Israelite’s did unspeaking things.

I wrote a post regarding the Canaanite’s atrocities:

        https://spiritualminefield.wordpress.com/2016/11/18/gods-patience-is-long-suffering/

John Arthur you need help, if you continue in rejecting scripture, you will be lost for an eternity.

  6. Hi Spaniard,

The bible says that God commanded the extermination of the Canaanites for their great wickedness and he gave them a long time to repent. He is alleged to have commanded Israel to carry out this policy of genocide.

Israel may have been justified in attacking the Canaanites but in no way were the Israelites justified in their wholesale slaughter of little children and babies for the things that their parents practised.

The Americans did not commit systematic genocide of German children and babies during WW2 and neither would they have been justified to do so.

Slaughter of children and babies (“leaving nothing that is alive breathe”) contradicts the Christian cannons of a “just war” and is never justified, no matter who is alleged to have said it.

If such be the case, then we can conclude that the bible is in error when it alleges that God commanded it. If you believe in the inerrancy of the bible, you are faced with having to conclude that God did , in fact, command such genocide. That is, it is tantamount to charging God with commanding murder. Of course, God never commands murder (and I did not say that he did) but the bible alleges that God commanded it. So if God never commands murder, he could
not have commanded the slaughter of defenceless children and babies.

Tell me where Jesus of Nazareth would have commanded such slaughter of children and babies? If the truth is the person of Jesus, and we look at how h treated little children, shouldn’t you rethink your views?

    Shalom,

    1. 1 Samuel 15
Samuel told Saul, “The Lord sent me to anoint you as king over His people Israel. Now, listen to the words of the Lord. 2 This is what the Lord of Hosts says: ‘I witnessed what the Amalekites did to the Israelites when they opposed them along the way as they were coming out of Egypt. 3 Now go and attack the Amalekites and completely destroy everything they have. Do not spare them. Kill men and women, children and infants, oxen and sheep, camels and donkeys.’”

You, John Arthur, say that God of holy scripture committed genocide which means mass murder right?

Now let’s say that you knew exactly what a person was going to be when they grow up and for an example, you knew that the baby that was born who’s name was Hitler was going to murder millions of people, would you put that baby to death?

You John Arthur and the rest of the false teachers always attack the Bible because you do not have the Holy Spirit living in your heart and are void of God. According to you John, if God would have killed Hitler as a baby He would have committed murder and since He let Hitler live one would say way didn’t God kill Hitler as a baby knowing what he was going to do. So you damn God if He does or condemn Him if He doesn’t do it.

God alone knows those children that He gave the command to kill. Let’s get the record straight, the human race belongs to God so to say that God doesn’t have the right to kill someone is ridicules because He owns everything.

All those women and children that God commanded to be put to death would have grown up to continue in their father’s footsteps in sacrificing babies to Molech, homosexuality, bestiality and etc.

Remember that their fathers were once babies who God allowed to grow up and who committed those atrocities so your mentality concerning scripture, are in error because you are not a Christian but a WOLF IN SHEEP’S CLOTHING.
