What Does Created In God’s Image Mean?

Genesis 1:26-27

26 Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness. They will rule the fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, the livestock, all the earth, and the creatures that crawl on the earth.”
27 So God created man in His own image; He created him in the image of God; He created them male and female.

Atheists as well as false Christians who support the book called “the Shack” state “since God created male and female in His image, God is both and can be represented as both.”

Folks, that type of Biblical interpretation is not from the Holy Spirit but is demonic. It is trying to make a mockery of God’s manifestation through Jesus Christ who came as a man.

Context will reveal what it means by the word image which does not mean physical likeness but means position.

In verse 26 it says, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness for what? They will rule the fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, the livestock, all the earth, and the creatures that crawl on the earth”. We are created in the likeness of His rulership. We are reflecting God’s authority over His creation which we are to rule over, just like God is the ruler of the universe so He has given us the authority to rule the earth.

Context defines image and likeness as in authority not in the sense of looking like Him.

A perfect illustration for this is found in Psalms 82:6-7 which says, 6 I said, “You are gods; (image or likeness, emphasis added) you are all sons of the Most High. 7 However, you will die like men and fall like any other ruler.”

The judges were called “gods” which in Hebrew is Elohim (little Elohim’s). They were earthly men with a high position of authority. Image of God and little Elohim’s both mean the same thing, rulers.

So in Genesis 1 to be made in the image of God meant that we are like Him as rulers.
