Why Was Jesus Born In A Manger?

Luke 2:4-7

So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. 5 He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. 6 While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, 7 and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.

Why was Jesus born in a manger? Humility, yes but it has a deeper meaning than that.

A manger or trough is a feeding box for animals and it was turned into a bed for the baby to sleep in.

The reason God chose to have His Son to be born around animals and placed in a feeding trough was that He didn’t come to reign as King but to be the sacrificial Lamb of God.

John 1:29

The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

Like a lamb, Jesus came to earth to be sacrificed and take our punishment that we deserve upon Himself. Through that sacrifice, we can obtain forgiveness of sins by placing our faith in Jesus and what He did for us on the cross. That revelation was first given to Abraham when Yahweh tested him to show what He was going to do with His Son Jesus Christ.

Genesis 22:6-8

6 Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac, and he himself carried the fire and the knife. As the two of them went on together, 7 Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, “Father?”
“Yes, my son?” Abraham replied.
“The fire and wood are here,” Isaac said, “but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?”
8 Abraham answered, “God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” And the two of them went on together. 

That is the reason why Jesus was in a manger to represent a lamb that was going to be slaughtered on our behalf so it was fitting for Him to come from there because of its great significance.
