John 10:28-30
28 I give them eternal life, and they will never perish—ever! No one will snatch them out of My hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all. No one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. 30 The Father and I are one.”
Jesus said that it is impossible to lose your salvation because no one is stronger than God by being able to snatch you out of His hand. The phrase “no one” includes the person in His hand unless you deem yourself to be stronger than the Lord?
Some professing believers claim that you can lose your salvation and point to verses like Hebrews 6:4-6.
I will explain the passages found in Hebrews 6:4-6 with its meaning in the text. The [bold emphasis ] will be my interpretation.
Hebrews 6:4-6
4 For it is impossible [no second chances] to renew to repentance [receiving the Holy Spirit a second time] those who were once enlightened [one who knew that Jesus is the way to the Father, John 14:6], who tasted the heavenly gift [those who saw the work of the Holy Spirit], became companions with the Holy Spirit [paricipated in the ministry through God’s church with Holy Spirit filled believers], 5 tasted God’s good word [witnessed the power of the Word of God] and the powers of the coming age, 6 and who have fallen away [departed from the Truth], because, to their own harm, they are recrucifying the Son of God and holding Him up to contempt [when a person has truly from the heart rejected Jesus Christ, for them to get saved again, Jesus would have to die on the cross for them all over again and that is not going to happen].
Hebrews 6, speaks about an individual who has experienced the moving of the Holy Spirit toward people’s lives and has been exposed to the truth of the Gospel and who has decided to walk away from Jesus. That type of person has sealed their fate. The passages above are not dealing with a Christian who rejected their faith but with someone who was close to accepting Jesus as their Savior but something happened.
2 Peter 3:16
16 He speaks about these things in all his letters in which there are some matters that are hard to understand. The untaught and unstable twist them to their own destruction, as they also do with the rest of the Scriptures.
Now we know why some say that you can lose your salvation, based on 2 Peter 3:16. Those who preach and teach that we do lose our salvation have to redefine the word “eternal life” to mean other than what it means. They also have to assume themselves stronger than Christ to pluck themselves away from His hand [John 10:29].
Now you know what Peter meant by someone twisting the Scriptures.
