Are We To Keep The Passover As Christians?

passover_door_blood

The Passover of Exodus illustrates that we are the house, the one putting the Lamb’s blood on my doorframe is Jesus [His sacrifice on the cross], and the destroyer [the angel of death] is the death sentence that I deserve but Jesus paid my debt in full, with His own life for mine which caused death to pass over me.

The only true way for a person to observe the Passover is by first of all having Jesus wipe His blood on the doorframe of your heart and give Him thanks for your salvation. What pleases the Lord is not that we celebrate any given festival, but that we have given our hearts to Jesus Christ and try to live according to the written Word of God.

What Jesus desires from us is obedience to His Word over observing festivals that He has already fulfilled.

1 Samuel 15:22

22 Then Samuel said:

Does the Lord take pleasure in burnt offerings and sacrifices
as much as in obeying the Lord?
Look: to obey is better than sacrifice,
to pay attention is better than the fat of rams.

Hosea 6:6

6 For I desire faithful love and not sacrifice, the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.

The Jews mandate to observe the Passover was because God wanted them to understand, that only through the lamb of God’s blood which God was going to provide us with was sufficient to cover our sins and have spiritual death pass us by.

Genesis 22: 7-8

7 Then Isaac spoke to his father Abraham and said, “My father.”

And he replied, “Here I am, my son.”

Isaac said, “The fire and the wood are here, but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?” 8 Abraham answered, “God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” Then the two of them walked on together.

Jesus wants us to have a strong relationship with Him and that is done by getting to know Him more by time spent in His Word.

At the end of the day, what really matters? What matters is that we imitate the Christ as revealed in Scripture and tell others about Him and support ministries that spread the Gospel. During Judgment Day for the righteous to see what rewards we will get, Jesus is not going to look at whether we have celebrated Old Testament festivals. He is going to judge us for the things that we have accomplished according to His will by seeing what we did with the resources He gave us.

If you want to observe the law and keep it, this will be the result

Galatians 5:4

4 You who are trying to be justified by the law are alienated from Christ; you have fallen from grace.
