1 Timothy 6:3
3 If anyone teaches false doctrine and does not agree with the sound teaching of our Lord Jesus Christ and with the teaching that promotes godliness
What did Jesus teach? He taught about salvation is obtained through Him alone [John 14:6], His relationship with the Father as the Son of God [Matthew 16:15-17], He claimed to be God [John 1:1, 14], to die for our sins and on the third day, he was going to rise [Mark 8:31], and the events that follow His second coming [Matthew 24, Revelation 6 and forward].
- Salvation is obtained through Him alone-If someone teaches a different Jesus or work-based salvation that person is preaching false doctrine. If he introduces another person for salvation other then Jesus, that teaching is false.
- His relationship with the Father as the Son of God-If a teacher denies that Jesus was not the Son of God or says it in a way that He is one of many, that is false doctrine.
- He claimed to be God-If they teach as the Mormons, Jehovah’s Witnesses, and Muslims do that He is not God, he is teaching false doctrine.
- To die for our sins and on the third day, he was going to rise-If a person teaches that Jesus didn’t die on the cross and rise from the grave but spiritually, they are spreading false and demonic doctrine.
- And the events that follow His second coming-If anyone preaches that Jesus is not coming back or that He already came, that would constitute as false doctrine. If a person gets Revelation wrong as to the mark of the beast or who the antichrist is and promote such a view, they are promoting false doctrine. Those who support such a teacher are promoting it indirectly.
2 Thessalonians 2:1-3
Now concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered to him: We ask you, brothers and sisters, 2 not to be easily upset or troubled, either by a prophecy or by a message or by a letter supposedly from us, alleging that the day of the Lord has come. 3 Don’t let anyone deceive you in any way. For that day will not come unless the apostasy comes first and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the man doomed to destruction.
If we preach and teach an unbiblical view of eschatology like Preterism or the Jehovah’s Witnesses and many other cults who teach that the rider on the white horse in Revelation 6, for an example is Jesus, that is twisting Scripture and making Jesus someone He is not. Look, Scripture only has one interpretation, not many. If a Christian who is filled with the Holy Spirit is teaching something that is wrong, he is preaching something false, but the Holy Spirit will rebuke and correct that individual.
Revelation 6:1-3
Then I saw the Lamb open one of the seven seals, and I heard one of the four living creatures say with a voice like thunder, “Come!” 2 I looked, and there was a white horse. Its rider held a bow; a crown was given to him, and he went out as a conqueror in order to conquer.
Jesus [the Lamb] is the one opening up the seals, He is not participating, making Himself the rider on the white horse. This rider will come to conquer the people through war and persecution.
Revelation 19:11-15
11 Then I saw heaven opened, and there was a white horse. Its rider is called Faithful and True, and he judges and makes war with justice. 12 His eyes were like a fiery flame, and many crowns were on his head. He had a name written that no one knows except himself. 13 He wore a robe dipped in blood, and his name is called the Word of God. 14 The armies that were in heaven followed him on white horses, wearing pure white linen. 15 A sharp sword came from his mouth, so that he might strike the nations with it. He will rule them with an iron rod. He will also trample the winepress of the fierce anger of God, the Almighty.
This rider is called the Word of God and is coming from heaven, but the one in Revelation 6, he does not come from heaven but is one of Jesus’ plagues which the other riders follow suit with different colors and meanings.
Anything that is taught in opposition to what is revealed and is plain in Scripture is false doctrine period. Either we contend for the truth or we will compromise the truth. We must take everything written in Scripture very seriously whether it might seem to us as minor or major for it is all of God’s Word.
A person who loves Holy Scripture will understand what I am saying.
We all make mistakes in interpreting any given verse or verses, but we must seek the Lord who opens up our understanding of His Word so that we can help others come to Jesus for salvation.
If you are having a hard time understanding any topic, that is fine. Ask the Lord for wisdom and seek those who are mature in the faith to help you, but do not teach what you don’t know because you will be promoting false doctrine.
