Lately, in the news, there have been an assistant pastor, a pastor’s son, and other Christians who have committed suicide. Some Christians say that they are in heaven, others that they are in hell. The question is, where are they and what exactly does the Bible say about suicide?
Where do the thoughts of suicide come from?
Judas Betrayed Jesus
John 13:21 When Jesus had said this, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, “Most certainly I tell you that one of you will betray me.”
John 13:27 After the piece of bread, then Satan entered into him. Then Jesus said to him, “What you do, do quickly.”
John 18:2 Now Judas, who betrayed him, also knew the place, for Jesus often met there with his disciples.
John 18:3 Judas then, having taken a detachment of soldiers and officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons.
Matthew 27:5 He threw down the pieces of silver in the sanctuary, and departed. He went away and hanged himself.
Judas suicidal thoughts came from Satan who was making him feel guilty for betraying an innocent man who at first convinced him to betray Jesus. The only way out is to commit suicide, words being whispered into the ears of Judas by Satan. That is Satan’s tactic, he will use you then discard you.
Can demons convince a Christian to actually commit suicide?
1 Corinthians 1:8 who will also confirm you until the end, blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Jude 1:24 Now to him who is able to keep them from stumbling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory in great joy
The promise of Scripture is that Jesus Himself will keep the believers’ faith strong until the end. The word suicide suggests hopelessness, one who has no faith.
Revelation 21:8 But for the cowardly, unbelieving, sinners, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their part is in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.”
The Scripture very clearly states that murderers cannot inherit the kingdom of heaven but, will be cast into the Lake of Fire, away from God’s presence.
1 Corinthians 6:19-20, 19 Or don’t you know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, 20 for you were bought with a price. Therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.
The body and spirit, does not belong to the believer for they were bought with the blood of Christ on the cross. Believers have no right to destroy their body by suicide in any shape or form.
1 Corinthians 3:16-17, 16 Don’t you know that you are a temple of God, and that God’s Spirit lives in you? 17 If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him; for God’s temple is holy, which you are.
In 1 Corinthians 3 states that if a person murders a Christian who is filled with the Holy Spirit, the murderer will be destroyed [cast into hell] by God. The question then becomes, how can a Christian destroy [commit suicide] if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in him? If he does then the Scripture says that God will destroy him. But, we know that God will keep us in right standing with Him until the end, He will keep our faith strong [1 Peter 1:5].
Suicidal thoughts are not self-generated but comes from an outside source. A person’s mind is equipped with self-preservation. Jesus said that Satan only comes to kill and to destroy.
Suicide is murder and shows no faith but hopelessness while a person with Christ, has hope. Through Christ, we will overcome any satanic attack because our strength comes from the Lord. A “Christian” who commits suicide never had the Holy Spirit living inside of him in the first place and has been defeated by the enemy, convincing him to commit self-murder. The Scripture is very clear on the issue, a person who has committed suicide shows that they are still from the world and are dead in their sins but those who are born again have overcome the world.
