(Luke 1:31-35) Jesus Is Revealed As The Son Of God

[Luke 1:31, BSB] “31 Behold, you will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to give Him the name Jesus.”

  • The angel, Gabriel, told Mary to name her Son, Jesus, after His birth. The name of the Son of God has great significance due to His purpose on earth and reveals who He is.

All names under heaven are given to us by God who puts it into the mind of the parents to name their child.

15 from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name.

-Ephesians 3:15, BSB

[Luke 1:32, BSB] “32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David,”

  • “He will be great” Refers to His exaltation.
  • “will be called the Son of the Most High This title reveals the deity of Christ. To be called the Son of God shows that Jesus reflects the divine nature of God. As a son mirrors the humanity of his father, making the son human likewise, Jesus mirrors God’s divine nature, making Him God.
  • “God will give Him the throne of His father David” This will be fulfilled at the second coming of Jesus Christ when He will reign as King of kings and Lord of lords on the earth for 1000 years.

17 But Jesus answered them, “To this very day My Father is at His work, and I too am working.” 18 Because of this, the Jews tried all the harder to kill Him. Not only was He breaking the Sabbath, but He was even calling God His own Father, making Himself equal with God.

-John 5:17-18, BSB

[Luke 1:33, BSB] “33 and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever. His kingdom will never end!”

  • “His kingdom will never end!” In Daniel 2:44, it reveals that four major kingdoms of the world will come and go, but the one that God will set up will last forever.

44 In the days of those kings, the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be destroyed, nor will it be left to another people. It will shatter all these kingdoms and bring them to an end, but will itself stand forever.

-Daniel 2:44, BSB
  • The first kingdom was Babylon.
  • The second kingdom was the Medes and Persians.
  • The third kingdom was Greece, and
  • The fourth kingdom was Rome.
  • Right before the millennial kingdom of Christ on earth, the Antichrist will rule for seven years, but after 3 1/2 years, he will rule with an iron fist. He will demand everyone to receive his mark [666] or die.

[Luke 1:34, BSB] 34 “How can this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?”

  • Mary was perplexed on how she can get pregnant without a husband. She didn’t understand the details of the angel’s pronouncement.

The miracles that God works in our lives are the impossibles. He does this so that we may not forget that it was Him who came through for us.

[Luke 1:35, BSB] “35 The angel replied, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the Holy One to be born will be called the Son of God.”

  • The angel explained to Mary that the Holy Spirit was going to plant the seed of Jesus in her womb.
  • “So the Holy One to be born will be called the Son of God” Jesus’ Father wasn’t from human origin, but from God, Himself, making Him the Son of God.

Open Your Heart To God

[Mark 10:21] “21 Jesus looked at him and loved him. “One thing you lack,” he said. “Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

[Mark 10:22] “22 At this the man’s face fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth.

[Mark 10:23] “23 Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!”

Jesus is knocking at the door of your heart because He loves you more than you can fathom. What’s keeping you from letting Him into your life? Pride, or maybe money? How about a lifestyle of careless living? Whatever the reason is, it is not worth it. We all are appointed to die once and go to a place of eternity.

There are only two places where you can choose. The first one is heaven, where Jesus reigns with His angels, and one day will reign on earth with His saints. The second one is the one that I would try to persuade you from going, which is hell. Hell, was first created for Satan and his fallen angels. Since men fell into sin, it has become our sentence unless we choose the only way out.

In John 11:25-26, the Scripture declares, “25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; 26 and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?”

The life that Jesus was referring to is one with Him in heaven where there are no sufferings, tears, pain, tribulations, homelessness, anguish, and sadness. If you reject Jesus, you won’t get eternal life, but a place of torment, where you will experience the pain of weeping and gnashing of teeth in hell. God is not in that place. And you don’t have to be there either.

The only way to escape the place of torment is by putting your trust in Jesus Christ, that He died for your sins on the cross, rose from the grave on the third day, and is seated with the Father in heaven. Only Jesus can forgive your sins if you ask Him. Why are you waiting? Remember, no one is promised tomorrow, so don’t waste any more time, go.

(Luke 1:26-30) Mary, A Righteous Woman Favored By God

[Luke 1:26] “26 In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth,”

  • Gabriel was sent to Mary In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy with John.
  • Gabriel and Michael are the only two angels that are named in the Scriptures.
  • Nazareth was north of Samaria, but Jesus was born in Judea from the tribe of King David to the south.

[Luke 1:27] “27 to a virgin engaged to a man named Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary.”

Mary was a godly woman who walked righteously in God’s sight.

  • At the time, God’s angel was dispatched to reveal God’s plan of redemption for mankind through her, by way of the impossibility [virgin birth]. Mary was starting her life, but it was about to get interrupted.

[Luke 1:28] “28 And the angel came to her and said, “Rejoice, favored woman! The Lord is with you.”

  • Before the angel told Mary God’s plan for her life, he told her what she meant to the Lord.
  • The word Rejoice means to bring an extremely good greeting.
  • The word favored in the context means to have God’s blessing due to her having a good relationship with the Lord.
  • Basically, the angel is saying to her, rejoice, God is going to bless you because you are pleasing in His sight.

How can one be favored by the Lord? First, believe in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. Second, read the Scriptures and walk in them. His favor will overflow to those who are obedient to His commands.

[Luke 1:29] “29 But she was deeply troubled by this statement, wondering what kind of greeting this could be.”

  • “deeply troubled” In Greek, it refers to being agitated due to her nervousness, not knowing what was going on, or being scared to what the angel was about to tell her.

[Luke 1:30] “30 Then the angel told her: Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.”

  • The angel moved to comfort Mary by telling her not to worry since she had received God’s favor.

With God’s favor [blessing], we should not fear God’s direction for our lives. He has the best for us in mind.
