(Luke 1:1-5) Luke Compiles An Account Of Jesus Christ For Theophilus

[Luke 1:1] “1 Many have undertaken to compile a narrative about the events that have been fulfilled among us,”

  • The Book of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John were not the only ones who undertook the task to write down the events and life of Jesus Christ. Luke does not say who they were, but we can conclude that they were believers. The Scripture has been written down to know and remember the life of Christ Jesus. This reveals that the accounts of Jesus’ life were preserved very early on. We must understand that the Books mentioned above were the ones the Holy Spirit used to spread the Gospel.

[Luke 1:2] “2 just as the original eyewitnesses and servants of the word handed them down to us.”

  • The accounts of Jesus Christ came directly from those who witnessed His miracles, walked with Him since the beginning of Jesus’ ministry, heard His messages [God’s Word], and who were eyewitness of His resurrection are the ones who gave testimony to the events that took place.

3 For I passed on to you as most important what I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures,
4 that He was buried, that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,
5 and that He appeared to Cephas, then to the Twelve.
6 Then He appeared to over 500 brothers at one time; most of them are still alive, but some have fallen asleep.
7 Then He appeared to James, then to all the apostles.
8 Last of all, as to one abnormally born, He also appeared to me.

[Luke 1:3] “3 It also seemed good to me, since I have carefully investigated everything from the very first, to write to you in an orderly sequence, most honorable Theophilus,”

  • Luke, who was a physician [Colossians 4:14] wanted his friend, Theophilus to have the most accurate account of the Savior, Jesus Christ. So, Luke took the task to investigate the life of Jesus Christ through the people who claimed to have been there with Jesus and heard Him speak. He didn’t take their words for it alone, but investigated their story carefully, and compared it with others, especially with Jesus’ disciples.

[Luke 1:4] “4 so that you may know the certainty of the things about which you have been instructed.”

  • Theophilus was told and given instructions on how to live for Jesus, but Luke wanted him to always have it with him and not forget it by writing it down for him.

[Luke 1:5] “5 In the days of King Herod of Judea, there was a priest of Abijah’s division named Zechariah. His wife was from the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth.

  • Elizabeth was a relative of Mary, the mother of Jesus, who was used to bring forth the Messiah, the Savior of the world.
