[Luke 1:21] “21 Meanwhile, the people were waiting for Zechariah, amazed that he stayed so long in the sanctuary.”
The passages with Gabriel speaking with Zechariah [verses 19-20], seems to indicate that it made Zechariah’s time in the sanctuary to tarry. Either Gabriel spoke to him right before he should have come out, or it made Zechariah stay longer due to experiencing a mighty angel. He needed to compose himself before he came out.
[Luke 1:22] “22 When he did come out, he could not speak to them. Then they realized that he had seen a vision in the sanctuary. He kept making signs to them and remained speechless.”
The word “vision” indicates a real encounter with a spiritual being, either with God Himself, an angel, or a demon, who will reveal themselves to the individual alone. Having the person’s eyes open to the spiritual realm.
[Luke 1:23] “23 When the days of his ministry were completed, he went back home.”
Zechariah had to continue in his temple service until his time would be completed. It does not mention the time frame for each priestly family chosen by lot.
When God gives you an assignment, you will have to stay in that ministry until your purpose is completed. We cannot stop doing what He has told us to do, or else we will miss a great blessing.
[Luke 1:24] “24 After these days his wife Elizabeth conceived and kept herself in seclusion for five months. She said,”
The context is silent for the reason why Elizabeth stayed away from people. It could be that she dedicated 5 months to be alone with the Lord to seek His face for taking her disgrace away.
Sometimes, when the Lord does a miracle in our lives, we stay away from people and distractions to seek the Lord more intently because our hearts have been stirred with His compassion.
[Luke 1:25] 25 “The Lord has done this for me. He has looked with favor in these days to take away my disgrace among the people.”
Elizabeth knew that her life was pleasing to the Lord as He took away her disgrace. This does not mean that her life before her being pregnant was displeasing to the Lord. Her blessing would not come until God’s timing.
When a person sins greatly, a server punishment would be childlessness.
20 If a man sleeps with his aunt, he has shamed his uncle; they will bear their guilt and die childless. 21 If a man marries his brother’s wife, it is impurity. He has shamed his brother; they will be childless.-Leviticus 20:20-21
