Christians And The Law

6 Now these things became examples for us, so that we will not desire evil things as they did.

-1 Corinthians 10:6 HCSB

“Now these things [referring to the Old Testament account] became examples for us” As believers in Jesus Christ, we are no longer under the Law. However, we do not break the Law but uphold it by the Spirit of God who dwells within us through faith in Jesus Christ. The Law is broken into three parts:

1. The Civil Law…

2. The Ceremonial Law and…

3. The Moral Law.

• The Civil Law was for the Jewish people, during the time, when they wandered in the wilderness for 40 years and when righteous kings reigned, following the Law.

• The Ceremonial Law was the sacrificial system and the observant of special days.

• The Moral Law existed before the other two were introduced. This Law has to do with how we deal with God and people.

Jesus said: “Don’t assume that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill” –Matthew 5:17. The Law pointed to Jesus’ death [and resurrection] for the sins of the world. The Law was to show how sinful we are and the impossibility to keep it all. The standard of God’s righteousness is too high to achieve.

Christians today, must read and learn from the Old Testament because many things still apply. We don’t depend on the Law for salvation, only in the person of Jesus Christ, but we live in obedience to the Moral Law found in the Old and New Testament. Those from the church that says, “We no longer need the Old Testament” they are short-sighted and understand nothing, being spiritually deficient. In 2 Timothy 3:16-17, it says, “16 All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness, 17 so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.”

“All Scripture is inspired by God” The “All” refers to the Old and New Testament. God’s Word, all of it, is applicable for today to equip us for every good work God has for us, for the glory of God the Father and our Lord Jesus Christ.
