(Luke 1:36-40) The Angel Gabriel, Confirmed The Reliability Of God’s Word

[Luke 1:36, BSB] “36 Look, even Elizabeth your relative has conceived a son in her old age, and she who was called barren is in her sixth month.”

  • Being barren for a woman was considered a disgrace. A barren woman couldn’t fulfill God’s command to fill the earth, and children provided for their parents when they got old.

[Luke 1:37, BSB] “37 For no word from God will ever fail.”

  • Gabriel, who stands in God’s presence [verse 19], confessed that the Word of God and its promises never fail. The angel is reassuring Mary to trust in the Word of God.

Those who put their faith in Jesus Christ, as the Scripture says, will receive eternal life, and after death will be with Jesus for all eternity. A person can be confident of this truth because God’s Word is trustworthy and reliable.

[Luke 1:38, BSB] “38 “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May it happen to me according to your word.” Then the angel left her.”

  • This passage shows what type of faith Mary had. Mary’s faith compared to Zechariah’s tells you that having a high position or a ministry, like Zechariah, does not make one’s faith stronger. It comes down to one’s conviction to trust in God no matter what and live according to His Word. That makes faith grow. Mary was a stay at home. Zechariah was a priest, and Mary had a stronger faith, plus she was much younger.

[Luke 1:39, BSB] “39 In those days Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judah,”

  • After the encountered with God’s angel, Mary quickly went to visit Elizabeth to witness God’s miracle.

[Luke 1:40, BSB] “40 where she entered the home of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth.”

  • God brought together both women who He was going to use in a mighty way. They shared their testimony, with each other, about God’s grace on them.

When God is working in your life, it is good to share it with a close friend in the faith. It will encourage them.
