(Luke 1:46-50) Mary Declares That Without God, She Can’t Get Saved

[Luke 1:46, BSB] “46 Then Mary said: “My soul magnifies the Lord,”

  • In verse 45, Elizabeth said to Mary that she is blessed because she believed in the Lord’s words to her that it will come to pass. Mary’s reply was to exalt the Lord for using her to bring about the fulfillment of His will.

The word “magnifies” means to declare someone great. Mary, from deep within her soul, acknowledged that the Lord is truly great because God has showered her with His favor.

[Luke 1:47, BSB] “47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior!”

  • Mary recognizes that God is her only Savior and without Him, there are no possibilities to have your sins forgiven. In Matthew 1:21, the angel tells Joseph that Mary is going to give birth to a Son who must be named Jesus because He will save His people, those who believe in Him, from their sins. Mary declares God her Savior and Jesus is declared the Savior of the world in the Book of Matthew. It is clear that in Matthew 1 and Luke 1, Jesus is identified as God.

A religious institution teaches that Mary was sinless and that she ascended into heaven like Christ. Not only is this unbiblical, but it is demonic and puts Mary as a goddess, making her followers into worshiping a false god.

[Luke 1:48, BSB] “48 For He has looked with favor on the humble state of His servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed.”

  • God favors the humble because those are the ones who submit to His Word and do His will. Mary understands that the baby inside her womb will be very special, and since she was chosen to bring into the world the Messiah, the Savior of the world, she will be called blessed.

[Luke 1:49, BSB] “49 For the Mighty One has done great things for me. Holy is His name.”

  • Mary does not fully comprehend the significance of her Son’s purpose. The Son to be born will be the answer to the plague that is killing humanity, which is sin. This sin is sending countless of people to hell. Jesus is the answer to this problem.

[Luke 1:50, BSB] “50 His mercy extends to those who fear Him, from generation to generation.”

The word “fear” does not suggest a fear that one has for a dictator who is cruel and evil. But, it means to show respect and honor to the One [being Jesus Christ] who is in control of all things, and because of Him, you exist, having an opportunity to receive eternal life.

  • When a person wants to change his life of sin, through the conviction of the Holy Spirit and understands that he needs Jesus, that person fears the Lord by wanting to respect and honor God with his life. The fear of God keeps you from sin.

By loving devotion and faithfulness iniquity is atoned for, and by the fear of the LORD one turns aside from evil.
