Part 1 of Psalm 91
Our Shelter
One who dwells in the shelter of the Most High Will lodge in the shadow of the Almighty. -Psalm 91:1
To dwell in God’s shelter, we have to first place our trust in Jesus Christ. Shelter is a place where we find safety and security. The phrase “the shadow of the Almighty” means that for His shadow to hit us, we have to be right next to Him. That is done by drawing near to Him through praying, reading, and living out the Scriptures.
Trusting In The Lord
I will say to the LORD, “My refuge and my fortress, My God, in whom I trust!” -Psalm 91:2
Only those who have the Holy Spirit in their hearts through faith in Jesus can be confident that God has placed them inside His fortress of protection.
Traps Are Set By The Devil
For it is He who rescues you from the net of the trapper And from the deadly plague. -Psalm 91:3
“The net” is the devil’s temptation, which will cause you to stumble if you fall into it. But there are more deadlier traps…“the deadly plague”…that he has for believers. Even though we walk in a path that is full of danger, we can rejoice because our hope is in Christ, who rescues us from total destruction.
Under His Wings
He will cover you with His pinions, And under His wings you may take refuge; His faithfulness is a shield and wall. -Psalm 91:4
Just like a hen that covers her chicks under her wings to protect them from a predator, likewise, the Lord’s presence, which is seen in the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, will keep us safe from our predator. This is seen in the Book of Job when Satan couldn’t get to Job to attack him. Satan needed access to him since Job was being protected by God.
Job 1:10 “Have You not made a fence around him and his house and all that he has, on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land.”
For us to go through testing, our fence of protection [which is God] has to be lifted from around us. The moment that happens, the devil will plant on our path all sorts of deadly traps to take our faith away by making us curse God for our troubles. Cursing God just simply means to call it quits, rejecting Him completely: trampling on the blood of Christ as something worthless.
How much more severe punishment do you think he will deserve who has trampled underfoot the Son of God, and has regarded as unclean the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has insulted the Spirit of grace?
