Our Faith Can Be Like A Wave

28 Peter responded and said to Him, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.” 29 And He said, “Come!” And Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water, and came toward Jesus. 30 But seeing the wind, he became frightened, and when he began to sink, he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!” 31 Immediately Jesus reached out with His hand and took hold of him, and said to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?” -Matthew 14:28-31

Peter’s faith resembled a wave. When Peter asked Jesus if he could go to Him on the water, the moment that Jesus told him to come, Peter had enough faith to take the first step to walk on the water. But when he took his eyes off of Jesus and toward the winds and the waves, his faith went down fast. So, Peter’s faith was like a wave, up one moment and down the next.

The good news is that when our faith gets hit and starts to go down toward despair, we can call out to Jesus and He will bring our faith back up.

The strength of one’s faith depends on our walk with the Lord. The closer we walk with Jesus, the harder it will be for our faith to sink. The opposite of course is true. How can one remain in Christ and stay close to Him? There is only one way to remain in Christ and that is seen in John 14:7 which says, “If you remain in Me, and My words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.”

For God’s Word to remain in us is by reading it, obeying it and proclaiming it to others. We have to believe in every word of Scripture or else we won’t follow it completely. Doubt is faith’s enemy. Having any doubt in the Scriptures will attack your faith.

A person who calls himself a Christian and yet does not believe in the inerrancy of Scripture is an indication of a breach in their faith, starving it to death. Jesus stated in John 8 who are His true disciples.

31 So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, “If you continue in My word, then you are truly My disciples; 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” -John 8:31-32

No matter what comes your way, seek the Lord Jesus Christ. Have your ears attentive when reading the Scriptures to hear from Him. Stay in communication with the Lord and pursue His will for your life.
