I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one can snatch them out of My hand. -John 10:28 BSB
The word “eternal” simply means unending. If Jesus promises a life that never ends to one who puts his trust in Him, how in the world can something unending end?
Let’s say you have a pen that its ink never runs out, what then can you do to make it stop producing ink? There is nothing you can do since its ink is not being produced by you. The same goes with eternal life. After conversion, a person’s spirit can’t stop being eternal because the person did nothing to make it that way. It is God who gives us eternal life through faith in Christ.
Pay attention to this. Those who say that you can lose eternal life are indirectly saying that the word “eternal” doesn’t mean eternal because it could stop being eternal. So, we can’t even trust Jesus’ words, according to most Pentecostals, Catholics, and other denominations that assert this.
in the hope of eternal life, which God, who cannot lie, promised before time began. -Titus 1:2 BSB
Anyone who says that you can lose your salvation is calling God a liar. Let’s go back to John 10:28 and see what Jesus meant by eternal life.
“I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one can snatch them out of My hand.”
John 10:28 clearly defines the word“eternal,” which means “will never perish.” Then how can you perish? My Pentecostal friends say that you can decide to leave Jesus and return to the life you once had of sin. Is that true? John 10:28 destroys that false teaching, but let’s look at another passage that will clarify why one cannot revert to a sinful lifestyle. Before I show the verse, I would like to add one of their arguments that they think that people like myself who believe we can’t lose our salvation that we teach that one can sin all they want and still go to heaven. That is completely untrue. No born-again Christian who believes in eternal security adheres to such nonsense. I brought up their argument because the passage I want to show will answer that.
Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away. Behold, the new has come! -2 Corinthians 5:17 BSB
The spirit of a person before coming to faith in Jesus was full of sin. The moment a person gets saved, the old self dies (passed away), and a brand new spirit (a new creation) is born, meaning all of his sins have been forgiven. If you are a new person and the old is gone, how can you revert to the person that has died? That part of your life that died cannot exist any longer. You won’t leave Jesus because you have become a new person inside through the indwelling Holy Spirit. Your desires have changed, and now your focus is to please the Lord Jesus Christ through His Word.
Friends, don’t just take what others say, including me—look at the Scriptures and see if what we say aligns with God’s Word.
I’m under the authority of Holy Scripture, not above it, and that’s what directs my life and tells me how to do the Lord’s will.
