3 The tempter came to Him and said, “If You are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” -Matthew 4:3 BSB
Demons will not come to you until they see an opportunity. This opportunity happens when you stop reading the Scriptures and skip many days of prayer. They will continue observing you, and when they see your faith dip to a certain degree, that’s when they attack you.
One of their attacks is to question your status with God. Satan asked Jesus to prove that He was the Son of God. The devil already knows who He is, but He wanted Jesus to do a miracle instead of relying on the Father to provide for Him. Demons will try to get you to depend on yourself and not wait on the Lord. If you do that, it will show a lack of faith on your part.
4 But Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” -Matthew 4:4 BSB
When Satan set his trap for Jesus, the Son of God answered back with Scripture. God’s Word is the only weapon we have that will give us the truth—so we won’t get deceived. God’s Word keeps us from falling into his traps by lighting up our path—to see all of the enemy’s pitfalls.
5 Then the devil took Him to the holy city and set Him on the pinnacle of the temple. 6 “If You are the Son of God,” he said, “throw Yourself down. For it is written: ‘He will command His angels concerning You, and they will lift You up in their hands, so that You will not strike Your foot against a stone.’” -Matthew 4:5-6 BSB
The devil will test your faith to see if he can deceive you by twisting Scripture to say something other than what it means. That’s how he uses the false teachers. They will quote the Bible but interpret it in a way that will fit their agenda. They use the Word of God for gain—to take something from you that they want. Jesus defeated Satan’s attack by going back to God’s Word (verse 7) to show him how he had distorted it.
The end goal for the devil is to get you to worship him instead of the Lord Jesus Christ. Just like Satan betrayed the Lord, so he wants you to betray Him as well. The devil wants you to be evil and dark. He hates the light and anything good. The devil wants to destroy you because he knows that the Lake of Fire is awaiting him, and he doesn’t want to be the only one there. He wants you to join him.
