13 Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again. 14 But whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a fount of water springing up to eternal life.”John 4:13-14 BSB
Jesus spoke to a woman—part Jew, part Gentile—who thought she and her ancestors were worshiping the true God (vs. 20). Jesus brought her back to reality and plainly told her that she had no clue who she was worshiping (vs. 22). The reason is that God’s Word (the truth) was given to the Jewish people to make a covenant and to build a strong relationship with them. But, the gift of God’s Word and God’s relationship with them wasn’t only for the Jews, but it was to bring about the Savior, who would open up the door to heaven (through the cross) for everyone, both Jews and Gentiles, who would believe in Jesus as Lord and Savior.
In verses 13-14, Jesus was teaching a spiritual reality with the water from Jacob’s well. Jesus told the Samaritan woman that if she drinks from that well, she will in no doubt get thirsty again. However, if she drinks from the water that Jesus gives, she will never get thirsty again.
The application is that if you drink water from another source like Islam, Mormonism, Jehovah’s Witnesses, New Age religion, the Occult, Spiritualism, etc., other than from the truth, Jesus Christ, you won’t be able to obtain eternal life. Every other religion cannot satisfy one’s thirst for the truth. The truth about God and the afterlife—can only be known through the Scriptures. Any other spiritual source apart from the Scriptures will only bring you into deep darkness.
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.John 14:6 BSB
No other spiritual water can quench your thirst by giving you eternal life. Jesus is the only one who paid the price for your sins. The price tag for sin was the death of a sinless life. Jesus, the righteous and sinless one, paid it in full. Don’t wait for tomorrow what you can do right now. Ask Jesus Christ to forgive you of all your sins and to save you, and He will (John 3:16-18).
