[Luke 2:6] “6 While they were there, the time came for her Child to be born.”
- Finally, the promised Messiah had arrived to bring God’s full revelation to mankind and fulfill Old Testament prophecies.
[Luke 2:7] “7 And she gave birth to her firstborn, a Son. She wrapped Him in swaddling cloths and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.”
- Not only was Jesus the firstborn son of Joseph and Mary, but Jesus is also described elsewhere, as the firstborn Son of God.
6 And again, when God brings His firstborn into the world, He says: “Let all God’s angels worship Him.” -Hebrews 1:6
15 The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. -Colossians 1:15
- The word “firstborn” does not refer to Jesus existing for the first time, but as a firstborn, He is preeminent (see Colossians 1:18)—all things belong to Him, everything that is in heaven and on earth.
16 For in Him all things were created, things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities. All things were created through Him and for Him. -Colossians 1:16
[Luke 2:8] “8 And there were shepherds residing in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks by night.”
- Being a shepherd seemed to be one of the lowest positions one can get. It was dangerous, as you would have to protect the sheep from dangerous animals. A shepherd had to carry a rod, having two different ends. One end was used as a weapon to protect the sheep, and the other had a hook to bring back strays. A shepherd also had to spend the nights in the open, whether it was cold or not, and during the day, they had to take the beating of the sun.
[Luke 2:9] “9 Just then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.”
- Why didn’t the angel of the Lord appear to a king, a priest, or any other religious leader? God will only reveal something to the lowly of heart. To hear from the Lord or understand the Scriptures, a person must display a humble spirit. These shepherds were humble due to their position.
[Luke 2:10] “10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid! For behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people:”
- The phrase “I bring you good news” in Greek is euaggelizó (Strongs #2097). It’s where we get the word “evangelize,” which means to preach the gospel.
- The good news that the angel was announcing to them was that the promised Savior of the world has been born.

Spiritual Minefield
