1 Now the angel of the LORD went up from Gilgal to Bochim and said, “I brought you up out of Egypt and led you into the land that I had promised to your fathers, and I said, ‘I will never break My covenant with you, 2 and you are not to make a covenant with the people of this land, but you shall tear down their altars.’ Yet you have not obeyed My voice. What is this you have done? -Judges 2:1-2 BSB
Why didn’t the LORD want His people to mix with the surrounding nations? Because they worshiped false gods and they will serve as a bad influence on them, which would make them fall into their trap and end up worshiping their gods, abandoning the LORD.
When you bind yourself with someone who does not have the Lord like in marriage, business, or friendship, you have put yourself in a dangerous situation. If you cannot influence them and bring them to Christ, the opposite will occur.
There are four types of landmines that the wrong person can introduce in the friendship and have the potential of causing your faith to get destroyed if you are not careful. See below.
- You can step on a landmine of misery (Numbers 33:55 “But if you do not drive out the inhabitants of the land before you, those you allow to remain will become barbs in your eyes and thorns in your sides; they will harass you in the land where you settle.”)
- You can step on a landmine of apostasy (1 Kings 11:2 “These women were from the nations about which the LORD had told the Israelites, “You must not intermarry with them, for surely they will turn your hearts after their gods.” Yet Solomon clung to these women in love.”)
- You can step on a landmine that will cause God’s wrath to fall upon you (2 Chronicles 19:2 “Jehu son of Hanani the seer went out to confront him and said to King Jehoshaphat, “Should you help the wicked and love those who hate the LORD? Because of this, the wrath of the LORD is upon you.”)
- You can step on a landmine that will cause you to compromise your moral excellence (1 Corinthians 15:33 “Do not be deceived: “Bad company corrupts good character.”)
Make sure that those you choose to connect emotionally on a deeper level belong to the Lord. And not that they only confess Jesus as Lord, but that they believe in sound doctrine and walk according to the truth of God’s Word.
