Why Do People Go To Hell?

First of all, we have to go back to the very beginning, to where it all started. God created the Lake of Fire, which is the second death (Revelation 20:14-15) for Satan and his angels when they rebelled against God in heaven. Matthew 25:41, “Then He will say to those on His left, ‘Depart from Me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.”

The moment that Adam, the first man created, sinned against God by eating the forbidden fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil (Genesis 3:6-7), death entered his soul: separation from God took place and they, he and his wife, were sentenced to the Lake of Fire. However, God atoned for their transgression (Genesis 3:21) by covering their nakedness with animal skin. That is the first sacrifice for sin which is a picture of Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross for the sins of the world.

Sin not only brings death because it separates you from God who is life, but it also condemns you to Hell. Hell is a place for those who are full of sin when they pass away from this physical realm to the spiritual. They cannot be with God because of their sins so Hell was created for sinful creatures (Satan and his angels) and for those who refuse to put their faith and trust in Jesus Christ for the cleansing of their sins.

John 3:17-18, “17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him. 18 Whoever believes in Him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe has already been condemned, because he has not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.”

Hell is an eternal place because we were created to be eternal beings and those in Hell are eternal sinners, and can no longer have their sins atoned for.

Satan doesn’t want anyone to go to heaven so that they can be cursed like he is cursed. That is the reason why there is so much deception in the world and false religion. Satan even introduced a false Jesus who cannot save you from Hell.

2 Corinthians 11:3-4, “3 I am afraid, however, that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent’s cunning, your minds may be led astray from your simple and pure devotion to Christ. 4 For if someone comes and proclaims a Jesus other than the One we proclaimed, or if you receive a different spirit than the One you received, or a different gospel than the one you accepted, you put up with it way too easily.”

2 Corinthians 11:13-15, “13 For such men are false apostles, deceitful workers, masquerading as apostles of Christ. 14 And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. 15 It is not surprising, then, if his servants masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will correspond to their actions.”

The only way a person can make it to heaven is through faith in Jesus Christ (John 3:16) and accepting what He did for you on the cross so that you may have your sins forgiven.

Hebrews 9:14-15, “14 how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself unblemished to God, purify our consciences from works of death, so that we may serve the living God! 15 Therefore Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, so that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance, now that He has died to redeem them from the transgressions committed under the first covenant.”

The “blood of Christ” refers to His death on the cross for our sins and the phrase “offered Himself unblemished to God” means that when Jesus died for us, He died and resurrected as a sinless person (Jesus never sinned once). The new covenant means that we are no longer under the Law but under the Law of the Spirit.

Galatians 5:16-18, 16 So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the flesh craves what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are opposed to each other, so that you do not do what you want. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

We are made right with God through faith in Jesus Christ and accepting His atonement for the removal of our offenses toward God.

Hell Desires To Have You. Take Refuge In Jesus

Sheol below is excited about you, to meet you when you come; It stirs the spirits of the dead for you, all the leaders of the earth; It raises all the kings of the nations from their thrones.

Isaiah 14:9, NASB

The word “Sheol” in Hebrew means the underworld, the place where people go after death. Before Jesus came and died on the cross for the sins of the world, Hades had two compartments. After Jesus rose from the grave and went to heaven, from that time on, all the saints after their death go straight to be with the Lord in heaven and no longer to Sheol (2 Corinthians 5:8).

The two compartments in Hades is seen in Luke 16:19-31. There was a rich man who lived for his money and at his gate was a beggar named Lazarus, who wanted to eat the scraps that fell from the rich man’s table. The rich man never helped Lazarus. The time came for them to die and both went to Hades. Lazarus went to paradise, another section of Hades while the rich man went to the place where the fires are at. There was a chasm between both places in Hades, so that the ones in paradise couldn’t cross over to help those in the fire and those in the fire couldn’t go to paradise.

From this point on, I will use the word Hell to refer to Hades for clarity.

In Hell there is nothing but fire reserved for those who die in their sins because they didn’t put their faith in Jesus Christ, having their sins forgiven. Hell desires you to occupy your place. Hell looks forward to have you, so that it may consume you with its fires.

Why does Hell have a desire for people to come there? We know that Hell is not animated but the Scriptures expresses it in such a way as to remind us our destiny without Jesus. Everyone who is born, their eternal dwelling after death is Hell because all of us are born in sin (Psalm 51:5) and no one with sin can enter into heaven. So, a place has been made for us in Hell.

There is a way to forfeit our place in Hell. Our sins must be washed away, making us clean and righteous before a Holy God. God has to punish sin because He is righteous and all evildoers must pay for their sins. Jesus came and took all of our sins upon Himself on the cross and died in our place for it. If we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior and ask Him for forgiveness, He will for give us. We must accept the conviction of the Holy Spirit who brings to your attention all of your sins and shows you how evil you are, referring to the sinful nature of the flesh.

If the Holy Spirit is talking to you, do not resist Him. Understand that it is for your good that the Holy Spirit is trying to make you see that you are a sinner and everything you do goes against God’s standard. Even the good that you might do, only glorifies yourself and not God who gave you life.

Remember, Hell desires you and it can’t wait to have you. Wake up before it’s too late. Get on your knees and ask Jesus Christ to save you today. You are never promised tomorrow.

What Happens To A Person In Hell

23 And in Hades he raised his eyes, being in torment, and saw Abraham far away and Lazarus in his arms.

-Luke 16:23, NASB

The word “torment” means to be tortured through examination. Strong’s# 931

There will be multiple methods of torment for a person in hell for rejecting Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.

The Fires Of Hell Will Not Go Out

In hell, you will be on fire, feeling the full intensity of it without being consumed by it.

43 And if your hand causes you to sin, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life maimed, than, having your two hands, to go into hell, into the unquenchable fire. -Mark 9:43, NASB

The Worms [In Hell] Do Not Die And Will Eat You Alive

In hell, there will be worms that will eat your flesh, going in and out of your body like your eyes, nose, mouth, ears, and other parts. Your body will be covered with worms, having the sensation of being consumed.

11 Your pride and the music of your harps Have been brought down to Sheol; Maggots are spread out as your bed beneath you And worms are your covering.’ -Isaiah 14:11, NASB

Tormented By Demons

Those in hell will be tortured relentlessly by demons. The demons have supernatural powers, and they will use their powers to bring unimaginable pain to the person while burning.

2 He opened the shaft of the abyss, and smoke ascended out of the shaft like the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened from the smoke of the shaft. 3 Then out of the smoke came locusts upon the earth, and power was given them, as the scorpions of the earth have power. 4 They were told not to hurt the grass of the earth, nor any green thing, nor any tree, but only the people who do not have the seal of God on their foreheads. 5 And they were not permitted to kill anyone, but to torment for five months; and their torment was like the torment of a scorpion when it stings a person. -Revelation 9:2-5, NASB

The word “abyss” means hell, as seen in Luke 8:30-31 30 And Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” And he said, “Legion”; because many demons had entered him. 31 And they were begging Him not to command them to go away into the abyss.”

In the time of the Great Tribulation, these demons will come out of hell (abyss means hell, see above) to torment the people on the earth who have the mark of the beast. The verses in Rev. 9 give us a glimpse that in hell, where they came from, are the ones who are torturing the lost souls in hell, as that is what they will do on earth when they are released. How do we know that these animalistic creatures [the locusts] are demons? In verses 7-9, the locusts have human characteristics, and in verse 11, they have as their king the angel from hell [abyss] named Abaddon in Hebrew and Apollyon in Greek, which means destroyer.

Being Suffocated In Hell

Another way that one will suffer in hell will be suffocation. The burning of your flesh in hell will produce massive smoke, which will be suffocating, making it very hard to breathe.

11 And the smoke of their torment ascends forever and ever; they have no rest day and night, those who worship the beast and his image, and whoever receives the mark of his name. -Revelation 14:11, NASB

As you can see, hell is a very horrible place to be for all eternity. God created hell for Satan and his angels, but since man fell into sin, we are going to the same place. Friend, I have good news. Jesus gave us a way of escape. He paid in full our debt of sin on the cross and on the third day, He rose from the grave, showing that He has the power to save us from hell.

16 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish, but have eternal life.

-John 3:16, NASB

All you need to do is believe in your heart what Jesus did for you on the cross, ask Him to forgive you of all your sins, and to come into your heart. Also, ask Jesus to give you the Holy Spirit, which He will give freely to anyone who asks Him. The moment Jesus forgives you, you will be a new person in Him. The Holy Spirit will build you up into His image and reveal through Scripture God’s will. Don’t waste any more time. Give your life to Jesus today.

9 that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved

-Romans 10:9, NASB
