You Become What You Worship And Believe In

15 The idols of the nations are silver and gold, made by the hands of men. 16 They have mouths, but cannot speak; they have eyes, but cannot see; 17 they have ears, but cannot hear; nor is there breath in their mouths. 18 Those who make them become like them, as do all who trust in them.

Psalm 135:15-18 BSB

The concept of an idol and why Satan uses it is because of what it does. An idol takes the place of God and rules the person’s life by directing him or her in a specific direction. It will take the individual into a path of deep darkness—away from the light—reaching a point that one can no longer comprehend what is true anymore.

In Scripture, an idol is called “a lie.” What a lie does, it turns everything upside down—like bad is good, good is bad, wrong is right, right is wrong, sin is righteous, righteous is sin, down is up, up is down, light is dark, dark is light, etc. Satan’s language is to speak in lies.

Psalm 135:18 says that you are what you believe and worship. If you trust in the Lord Jesus Christ and worship Him, who is life, it makes you alive and gives you light to see the truth. But, if you worship idols, which are dead and lifeless, you become like them—spiritually dead—walking in pure darkness.

How about you, what do you believe? Do you assume that idols can hear your prayers and can give you what you have asked? If you do, you will base your life on a lie, and everything you do will be for the lie. Faith in Idols, in a false Jesus, a false gospel, and a false spirit—all of them will take you to hell. We have to believe in the right Jesus, as the Scriptures declare Him to be so, that we can know the truth— setting us free from the lie that leads to death.

The Snare Of Idolatry

You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in the heavens above, on the earth below, or in the waters beneath.

Exodus 20:4 BSB

What is the purpose of an idol? An idol is something that the devil uses to redirect you from worshiping the Lord to go towards him through the image. The first warning is not to construct or even purchase an idol to bring it home. The moment you do that, you have set a snare and jumped right in it to capture your soul. The worst part is that you have no idea what you just did. That is how the devil deceives you and captures your soul by putting it into bondage.

Without you being aware, you have invited a demon (through an idol) to take residence in your home.

14 Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry… 20 No, but the sacrifices of pagans are offered to demons, not to God. And I do not want you to be participants with demons.

1 Corinthians 10:14, 20 BSB

“in the form of anything in the heavens above” refers to God prohibiting a person from making an idol into the shape or likeness of any godly men or women who are in heaven from the Scriptures. One can also include angels and the Lord Jesus Christ. The word “heavens” can also mean the sun, moon, and stars.

“on the earth below” means that you cannot make an image of someone that’s alive that might seem to you very godly to set up in your home. You can also add trees of all kinds, rocks, mountains, and other created things on the earth. The phrase “or in the waters beneath” includes all types of fishes and mammals of the sea.

Your worship should only go to Jesus Christ, the true Living God, who is the Creator of all things seen and unseen. He alone is worthy of worship. Jesus wants you to worship Him directly, not through intermediary things, for the Lord is a personal God who wants a personal relationship with you. How can He have a personal relationship with you when you are seeking it from somewhere else. That’s like a person calling his neighbor to find out how his family is doing instead of calling them directly.

The Scripture is crystal clear that those who practice idolatry will not make it to heaven.

9 Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who submit to or perform homosexual acts, 10 nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor verbal abusers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God.

1 Corinthians 6:9-10 BSB

Look at the list above of what the Scripture considers a wicked man who will not “inherit the kingdom of God,” and you will find the word “idolaters” as one of the conditions that will keep you from going to heaven and finding yourself in hell.

Run from Idolatry by throwing away any of them that you might have in your home. Put your faith in Jesus Christ and serve Him only.

Do Not Worship Images Of Gold And Silver

16 While Paul was waiting for them in Athens, his spirit was troubled within him when he saw that the city was full of idols….22 Then Paul stood in the middle of the Areopagus and said: “Men of Athens! I see that you are extremely religious in every respect. 23 For as I was passing through and observing the objects of your worship, I even found an altar on which was inscribed: TO AN UNKNOWN GOD. Therefore, what you worship in ignorance, this I proclaim to you. 24 The God who made the world and everything in it—He is Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in shrines made by hands. -Acts 17:16, 22-24

“his spirit was troubled within him” There’s going to be times when the Holy Spirit will touch your spirit to make you aware of sin in people’s lives so that you may say something to them, warning them about the wrong direction they are headed in their current state. Testify to them that without Christ, there is no salvation.

“Therefore, what you worship in ignorance” People who worship idols or anything else that is not the Lord do it under pure ignorance. Idolaters have no clue of the consequences of worshiping an idol. The Scriptures makes it clear of that consequence in 1 Corinthians 6:9, “Don’t you know that the unrighteous will not inherit God’s kingdom? Do not be deceived: No sexually immoral people, idolaters, adulterers, or anyone practicing homosexuality”

God, who created the universe, cannot be put in a man-made altar thinking that they are worshiping Him. God is too big to fit in an altar. Even the universe is too small for Him. The Lord lives in heaven, which is outside of our dimension.

My brothers, flee from idolatry and only worship Jesus Christ.
