Why Does The Scripture Say That We Are Good-For-Nothing Slaves?

Lk17

Luke 17:10

10 In the same way, when you have done all that you were commanded, you should say, ‘We are good-for-nothing slaves; we’ve only done our duty.’”

Why did Jesus seem to say that we should have the mentality of being an unworthy slave when doing God’s will?

Jesus is not saying that we should look down on ourselves as being worthless. What He is saying is that we should have an attitude of humility. We are truly unworthy of Jesus’ love through His death and resurrection. He didn’t have to die but His love for us compelled Him to do it.

Jesus wants us to always have a mind of humility so that we would not drift away from Him. Pride shoves dependency on Jesus away and puts it on us.

Those who humble themselves, Jesus exalts.

1 Peter 5:5-6

5 In the same way, you younger men, be subject to the elders. And all of you clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because

God resists the proud
but gives grace to the humble.

6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God, so that He may exalt you at the proper time

James 4:6

6 But He gives greater grace. Therefore He says: God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.

The word grace in Greek refers to receiving God’s favor.

Let us always exalt Christ by obeying Him through His Word

The verse above came to my mind today with its own explanation. I believe that the Lord gave it to me to share it. May it bless you as it did me.

Are you living in rebellion to God’s will? Stop before it’s too late

saying-no

When King Saul was going after David to kill him he was doing it out of envy. King Saul was disobeying the LORD by going after the Lord’s anointed. David was anointed after Saul rejected the Word of the Lord and so God rejected him. David didn’t dare to lift a finger on God’s anointed, Saul, anointed when he was young to make him King over His people. King Saul is a picture of those who are living a life that’s contrary to God’s will. David on the other hand is a picture of Jesus Christ who continues to show you His mercy by sparing your life even though He could take it at any time because of your rebellion which we will see with the verses below.

1 Samuel 24: 3-7
3 When Saul came to the sheep pens along the road, a cave was there, and he went in to relieve himself. David and his men were staying in the back of the cave, 4 so they said to him, “Look, this is the day the Lord told you about: ‘I will hand your enemy over to you so you can do to him whatever you desire.’” Then David got up and secretly cut off the corner of Saul’s robe. 5 Afterward, David’s conscience bothered him because he had cut off the corner of Saul’s robe. 6 He said to his men, “I swear before the Lord: I would never do such a thing to my lord, the Lord’s anointed. I will never lift my hand against him, since he is the Lord’s anointed.” 7 With these words David persuaded his men, and he did not let them rise up against Saul. Then Saul left the cave and went on his way.

1 Samuel 26: 7-9,12,21
7 That night, David and Abishai came to the troops, and Saul was lying there asleep in the inner circle of the camp with his spear stuck in the ground by his head. Abner and the troops were lying around him. 8 Then Abishai said to David, “Today God has handed your enemy over to you. Let me thrust the spear through him into the ground just once. I won’t have to strike him twice!” 9 But David said to Abishai, “Don’t destroy him, for who can lift a hand against the Lord’s anointed and be blameless?”

12 So David took the spear and the water jug by Saul’s head, and they went their way. No one saw them, no one knew, and no one woke up; they all remained asleep because a deep sleep from the Lord came over them.

21 Saul responded, “I have sinned. Come back, my son David, I will never harm you again because today you considered my life precious. I have been a fool! I’ve committed a grave error.”

Remember, all those times that your life was spared or it could have ended really bad but everything turned out OK. God is trying to get your attention that you are heading deeper into sin and He wants you to repent and believe in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior before it’s too late like you will see with King Saul going to the point of no return. Instead of consulting the Lord with a humble spirit, he went to consult with a medium which is controlled by demons so, in reality King Saul went to consult demons.

1 Samuel 28:7-8
7 Saul then said to his servants, “Find me a woman who is a medium, so I can go and consult her.” His servants replied, “There is a woman at En-dor who is a medium.” 8 Saul disguised himself by putting on different clothes and set out with two of his men. They came to the woman at night, and Saul said, “Consult a spirit for me. Bring up for me the one I tell you.”

Stop with your unbelief in the Lord and living in continual opposition to God’s will before you’ll go too deep where there is no return for you.
