The Trinity in Deuteronomy 6:4
The Trinity is not only mentioned but revealed in Deuteronomy 6:4
First of all, let’s see what the word Trinity means. Trinity means that there is one God who exists as three persons, God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit all three being one God, Yahweh.
Biblically, this is seen in:
1. Genesis 1:1, Isaiah 44:24, Isaiah 45:18–God as Creator; John 1:1-3, Colossians 1:16–Jesus as Creator
2. Isaiah 43:11–There exist no other Savior besides God; Acts 4:8-12, John 14:6–There exist no other Savior besides Jesus Christ
3. John 20:28–Jesus is literally called God; John 14:7-9–Jesus plainly tells Philip that He is God because Philip asks to see God and Jesus replies that he is looking at God
4. Deuteronomy 30:6–God is the one to circumcise the heart of men so that they may be new; Romans 2:29–The Holy Spirit is the one to circumcise the heart of men so that they may be new
5. Acts 5:3-4–The Holy Spirit is called God because both are used in the context as if you have lied to the one you have lied to the other, both being one and the same.
Who is the Messiah?
The Messiah to come into the world as said in the Old Testament is to be God Himself.
Malachi 4:4-6
4 “Remember the instruction of Moses My servant, the statutes and ordinances I commanded him at Horeb for all Israel. 5 Look, I am going to send you Elijah the prophet before the great and awesome Day of the LORD comes. 6 And he will turn the hearts of fathers to their children and the hearts of children to their fathers. Otherwise, I will come and strike the land with a curse.”
1. LORD all caps refers to Yahweh
2. Elijah refers to John the Baptist (Matthew 17:10-13)
John the Baptist came in the ministry of Elijah for the sole purpose to make the people’s heart open and ready to receive Yahweh when He would come in human flesh in the person of Jesus Christ.
Now we can understand Deuteronomy 6:4 which says, 4 “Listen, Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is One (Echad).
The Hebrew word for “One” is a unified One. In the Hebrew language, there are two different words to say the word one, but in English, there is just one word to say one. Below you will see both examples of those words
1. Echad which means for an example: There’s “one” team out in the field or as “one” men together. A group of people that are considered as one is the idea behind the word “Echad”
2. Yachid which means a numeric “one”, a literal one, for an example: I have one pencil left or there’s only one person in the house.
Deuteronomy 6:4 uses the word Echad to say the LORD is One. God was trying to show that He exists as a plural but even in that plurality, He is still one God NOT many. We see this in Matthew 28:18-20 which says, 18 Then Jesus came near and said to them, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
As you can see in verse 19, Jesus uses a word that’s singular to describe 3 persons just like the word “one” in Deut. 6:4.
To say that God cannot manifest Himself as three persons is not only limiting Him to our understanding but we have made up our own God who is foreign to Scripture. God is an infinite being who is beyond our comprehension who is the I AM. In the same way, we accept the fact that God is in every single believer at the same time but yet some would deny Him being as three.
If we would fully understand the nature of God then He wouldn’t be God.
