Christmas means the mass on Christ’s day. We understand that Jesus wasn’t born on December 25, but this day is used to remember the birth of Christ and why He came to earth. The name Jesus means the LORD saves. In Matthew 1:23, Jesus has the name Immanuel which that name tells us that God has come down to mankind, and reveals who Jesus is, God in human flesh (John 1:1).
The greatest gift known to men came from God, as stated in John 3:16.
For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that everyone who believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. -John 3:16 BSB
God gave us His Son so that through faith in Jesus, we may receive eternal life.
The gift that God gives is eternal because He is eternal. Those who accept the gift of God by opening their hearts to Jesus Christ will never lose the gift of eternal life, as the word itself means.
My hope for everyone is that all may come to repentance and give their lives to Jesus Christ to follow Him, do His will, and walk according to the Word of God.
5 Who then overcomes the world? Only he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God. 6 This is the One who came by water and blood, Jesus Christ—not by water alone, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who testifies to this, because the Spirit is the truth. 7 For there are three that testify: 8 the Spirit, the water, and the blood—and these three are in agreement. -1 John 5:5-8 BSB
How does the Spirit, the water, and the blood testify about who Jesus is?
We will look at all three to see how they testify about Jesus and what exactly they mean.
We’ll start first with the water. For this, we will go to John 1:29-31.
29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! 30 This is He of whom I said, ‘A man who comes after me has surpassed me because He was before me.’ 31 I myself did not know Him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that He might be revealed to Israel.” -John 1:29-31 BSB
John the Baptist came baptizing so that the Son of God, the Savior of the world, would be revealed to him and, in turn, he would reveal Him to the Jews. The Father told John that when he sees the Holy Spirit descend like a dove upon the man that comes to him to get baptized, He is the Son of God (the Messiah). He (Jesus) will baptize with the Holy Spirit those who believe in Him, giving them eternal life (John 1:32-34 BSB).
Also, John heard God the Father say, “17…”This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased!”
Now we will look at the blood and what that means. For this, we will go to John 12:32-33.
32 And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw everyone to Myself.” 33 He said this to indicate the kind of death He was going to die. -John 12:32-33 BSB
the phrase “lifted up” refers to His crucifixion. The blood testifies about Jesus through His sacrifice, dying for the sins of the world. The cross testifies about Jesus being the Messiah because it fulfills Isaiah 53.
Now we will look at the Spirit. Here the Spirit refers to the Holy Spirit. The Spirit of God will testify to the world about the Father calling Jesus the Son of God in Jesus’ baptism and about Jesus’ death on the cross, which was the payment for everyone’s sins. The Holy Spirit will convict the world of the truth, what Jesus did for us and that He is God (John 1:1).
If anyone rejects Jesus paying for our sins on the cross, they cannot get saved. If they reject the Father’s testimony about Jesus being the Son of God, having the same nature as the Father, making Jesus God, they cannot get saved (Hebrews 1:3-8).
We cannot obtain eternal life if we reject the Holy Spirit’s testimony about Jesus.
