Is doctrine important? What’s the danger in deviating from sound doctrine?

rob bell no hell

2 Timothy 4:3-4
3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; 4 and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.

Doctrine in Greek is didaskalia which means properly applied-teaching; Christian doctrine (teaching) as it especially extends to its necessary lifestyle (applications). Strong’s # 1319

Fable in Greek is muthos which means a myth; a false account, yet posing to be the truth; a fabrication (fable) which subverts (replaces) what is actually true. Strong’s #3454

When a person preaches or teaches you fables which is a different doctrine, he is feeding you untruth about Jesus Christ which will detour you from the right path. Once you start walking in the wrong path, the longer and farther you go down that path of false doctrine, the longer it will take to come back to sound doctrine. Not only are you being deceived but you unknowingly will relay that same false message to your hearers thus deceiving them in the process.

2 John 1:9-11
9 Whoever transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God. He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son. 10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this doctrine, do not receive him into your house nor greet him; 11 for he who greets him shares in his evil deeds.

Doctrine is very important because it is the Truth taught by Jesus Christ and the Apostles who spoke the message of Truth that the Holy Spirit put in their hearts/minds so that they may come to the knowledge of the truth and be saved. If anyone comes to you with a different gospel with a different doctrine, do not have anything to do with that person unless you want to preach to him/her the Truth. In Middle Eastern custom, when you received someone into your house you would support that person by providing for him so that he could continue on his mission. In modern day, that would be like giving material or emotional support to a person preaching false doctrine and making yourself an accomplice to the evil he/she is causing with the false message being preached.

2 Timothy 3:13-14
13 But evil men and impostors will grow worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived. 14 But you must continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them,
2 Timothy 3:19-17
16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Without sound doctrine, you will only go downhill in deception, drifting away into deep waters without seeing land and eventually die for lack of nourishment (Ephesians 4:12-14). That’s the outcome in not caring to know sound doctrine choosing to believe what’s false and never coming back to the Truth. You will end up dying spiritually. The man of God can only be complete and equipped to do God’s will with sound doctrine or else how will he/she know how to please God and correct those who are preaching false doctrine, saving them and their hearers as well?

1 Timothy 4:1-3
Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons, 2 speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron, 3 forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from foods which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth.

Demons have their own doctrine. For example: Jehovah Witnesses believe that Jesus is not God that He is the Archangel Michael, Mormonism believes that Jesus and Satan are brothers and that one day you and I can become Gods like God the Father. Muslims believe that Jesus never died on the cross and that He is not the Son of God thus rejecting Jesus as being God. Those are examples of doctrine of demons. Why read the Bible if you don’t care about doctrine? Sound doctrine will drive you closer to Jesus Christ and false doctrine will take you away from Jesus Christ. This is the vital importance of knowing it.

1 Timothy 1:3-4
3 As I urged you when I went into Macedonia—remain in Ephesus that you may charge some that they teach no other doctrine, 4 nor give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which cause disputes rather than godly edification which is in faith.

We must never teach another doctrine but make sure that what we preach and teach is sound. All the cults (who believe in a different Jesus) believe sincerely that they are teaching sound doctrine but in reality, they are teaching you Satanic doctrine right from the pits of hell if I may say it. Make sure that you are sound by knowing the scriptures or else the enemy will use your ignorance to spread his erroneous doctrine instead of the gospel.

Regarding why some Christians disagree on some interpretation that does not affect the fundamental doctrine of scripture, how can two Christians read the same passage and come out with two different interpretations? I think Rode Rhodes gives a beautiful illustration that I would like to share.

“The Holy Spirit as a radio station sending out a perfect signal that’s always the
same, never varies in any way. Christians are like radio receivers. Some
radio work really good and some don’t work so good. Some radios have bad
batteries, some radios have a broken antenna, some radio have small
speakers you could hardly even hear it. By analogy the point I’m making
is Christians have different things wrong. Some Christians are too close
to the world. Some have not repented of all their sins. Some Christians
don’t read the bible often. Because of these different levels of
problems among Christians, they have different levels of receptivity to
that one perfect signal.”

  1. Very good message! Also, to add to the ‘some Christians’ at the end is that not all Christians are at the same level of growth and understanding and knowledge. These are all progressive. The further we walk in obedience to the Spirit of the Lord, the further along that road we are. The trouble today is that when one with more experience than another tries to share their view, this view and that person are oftentimes rejected and without the opportunity for further proof. Seemingly, gone are those days where we patiently let the other person share their knowledge and understanding fully. We interrupt them on those points we do not agree with and do not let that point be elaborated on so that we can ‘compare notes’, so to speak. Not everyone are good ‘notetakers’ as we have seen while in school. Not everyone hears correctly or is as attentive in their hearing as others. Some hear just a portion and will oppose those who hear more clearly.

When this happens, I can hear the admonition of the Lord through James in chapter 4 when he says, “From where do wars come from among you? Do they not come from your desires for pleasure that war in your members? You lust and do not have. You murder and covet and cannot obtain. You fight and war. Yet you do not have because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures…”

These arguments are coming from an unregenerated soul, not yet put into submission to the Spirit of God. James further says that the solution is to “Submit yourselves to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Lament and mourn and weep! Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.

If we adopted the attitude of Paul as shown in Philippians 3:7-16, then there would be no arguments and far less disagreements as all would be eager to hear that truth another has experienced (witnessed by the Spirit of the Lord). For if we give ear, we shall increase in our own growth but if we are satisfied that what we know and understand cannot be questioned or challenged, we are the ones who will suffer loss.

The scripture teaches that ALL scripture is good for:

2 Timothy 3:16-17 AMPC Every Scripture is God-breathed (given by His inspiration) and profitable for instruction, for reproof and conviction of sin, for correction of error and discipline in obedience, [and] for training in righteousness (in holy living, in conformity to God’s will in thought, purpose, and action), So that the man of God may be complete and proficient, well fitted and thoroughly equipped for every good work.

I believe this includes all scripture for all that God has given us to profitable to us for life and life more abundantly.

Again, thank you for sharing this message and I pray that we have more patience with one another and if there are questions or disputes, may we keep our hearts with all diligence so that the enemy will not persuade us to be impatient. If we disagree, let us then find that point of disagreement and elaborate on it, examine it to see if what we understand can be proven correct or proven incomplete or incorrect. For we all desire to know the truth for the experiential knowledge of the truth will be that which makes us more free.

  2. That was a great feed back Jerry. A lot of Christians don’t understand doctrine and what it truly means. You and I Jerry, if we believe in the fundamental doctrine of the faith which is found in Jesus Christ then we are truly brothers. But in the other hand lets say a Jehovah Witness who rejects one of the fundamental of the faith which in their case is the deity of Christ being the second person of the trinity (God the Son) that would make them illegitimate brothers in Christ to us spiritually speaking. That’s what we have to keep in mind.

  3. Indeed. This gives us even more need to be always in touch with the Holy Spirit’s input in our lives. Most Christians I know will not answer their door if they see a Jehovah Witness there or will ‘hide’ till they get tired and leave. I relish that time when they knock on my door because immediately I asked the Lord, what do YOU want me to say to them? Sometimes, there is nothing to say but to see them off graciously. Other times, I stand outside speaking to them and am mindful of their reactions as they hear something the Spirit of the Lord is speaking directly to their hearts. There were times they were astounded with my answer to them and wanted to know where I go to church. They ask, not because they want to go where I go but are curious about why I spoke as I did. So instead of answering them according to their own words, I continue to give them what the Spirit of the Lord is saying to them. Men like to divert from the truth but the Spirit of God is not so easily diverted. Some who have come to my door, I was given words of knowledge about one or both of them and each time, they were stunned. An opportunity then was given me to witness the truth to them, not to ‘expose’ their false doctrine but to reveal the true doctrine which moves in the power of God.

So, to me, an illegitimate brother is no different than a son of satan. They are both lost and do not the God of Life as I do. If we speak what the Spirit is speaking, through His power, they will be left without excuse when their day comes. I do not speak for their condemnation as they are already condemned because they refuse to come to the light. But we speak as the Father to reconcile the world back to Himself. We do this not with prepared speech but a prepared heart.

  4. I actually mess it up a lot as I was learning to hear His Voice. Even today, I find that I need to be sure it is His voice I am responding to before I speak and after I speak, I seek Him to confirm whether I said what He wanted me to say. Knowing we can all falter, this process has become a common practice for me now for many years.

Even when I am to give a prophetic word to someone, it is the same process. I do not want to be one who will be found not speaking God’s Word and putting His name on it. If I speak in His name, I must be absolutely certain I am hearing His voice for it will prove itself out if I am not.

Gratefully, each prophetic word He has given me to speak to someone individually or as a group, has borne out. Of this I am very grateful.

Probably what surprises me the most is when a person whom I have not seen from in years, happens across my path and tells me of a prophetic word I released to them long ago. So far, each one I heard from years later, let me know that it happened to them just as I said it would. WHEW! A sigh of relief! Believe me, speaking of that which I do not know is always a huge step of faith but God confirms His word with signs and wonders and it is this that brings great relief to the one bearing that word.
