1 Samuel 5:1-5
After the Philistines had captured the ark of God, they took it from Ebenezer to Ashdod. 2 Then they carried the ark into Dagon’s temple and set it beside Dagon. 3 When the people of Ashdod rose early the next day, there was Dagon, fallen on his face on the ground before the ark of the Lord! They took Dagon and put him back in his place. 4 But the following morning when they rose, there was Dagon, fallen on his face on the ground before the ark of the Lord! His head and hands had been broken off and were lying on the threshold; only his body remained. 5 That is why to this day neither the priests of Dagon nor any others who enter Dagon’s temple at Ashdod step on the threshold.
The Ark of the covenant was placed in the temple of Dagon by the Philistines. The Ark of God contained the Ten Commandments which are the Word of God, so you had facing each other the Word of God, the Truth, and Dagon an idol, the lie from Satan. God’s Word defeated the lie (Dagon) by putting its face to the ground. Once again Dagon was stood up to face God’s Word (the Ark) again.
Here you see, as an illustration, the Light vs. darkness or the Truth vs. the lie. The second time God’s Word completely destroyed the lie by chopping it up into pieces. When we are reading Holy Scripture and live according to it, we will have the Full Armor of God on (Ephesians 6:10-18) and will destroy any lie that Satan hurls at us.
We see the strength of God’s Word in the Book of Matthew 7:24-25 which says, 24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.”
Satan can never defeat the Word of God, that’s why it is vital that we live by it so that we may be prepared on the day of battle.

That’s a good conclusion SlimJim. Behind God’s Word is God who is all powerful and not even the gates of hell can overcome the Word of God.

Hi,
I have just read this story in my Bible recently and it is very interesting indeed. The Philistines also were dying with Tumours as well, when they held the ark for seven months.
I have written also about the ark of the covenant – but looking more at the death of Uzza, and how the ark was really meant to be handled.
As an aside, I am wondering where you obtain your images from, as I really like the one of the ark open showing the tablets with the 10 commandments inside. (You could always let me know via my Contact form if you wanted). Much appreciated.

I love that story! It’s up there with Elijah and the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel.
Sorry to be the fussy directing major here, but maybe the artist could re-read the story and show Dagon face down, bowing to the Ark with his head broken off, too. (This nitpicking brought to you by the blogger who called her blog “Seeking Divine Perpsective” for over a year. 🙄)
