The Blossoming Staff Of Aaron

Aaron's staff

Numbers 17:1-5

The LORD instructed Moses: 2 “Speak to the Israelites and take one staff from them for each ancestral tribe, twelve staffs from all the leaders of their tribes. Write each man’s name on his staff. 3 Write Aaron’s name on Levi’s staff, because there is to be one staff for the head of each tribe. 4 Then place them in the tent of meeting in front of the testimony where I meet with you. 5 The staff of the man I choose will sprout, and I will rid myself of the Israelites’ complaints that they have been making about you.”

All 12 staffs were dried up without any signs of life but God said that the one who belongs to Him [are chosen] will sprout and produce fruits for His kingdom.

Many people proclaim to be in Christ, but only those who produce the evidence will reveal that God really lives in them.

Each of us represents a staff with the potential of doing God’s will if we respond to the conviction of the Holy Spirit. God gives the call with only a few responding to it. For out of 12 staffs, only 1 sprouted and produced fruit. Jesus said in Matthew 7:14 “How narrow is the gate and difficult the road that leads to life, and few find it.” How hard it is to choose Jesus over the world. In Matthew 16:24 it says, Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If anyone wants to follow after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.”

A person has to be willing to suffer for Christ, deny one’s sinful desires and love others as yourself, destroying self-centeredness.

Numbers 17:8

8 The next day Moses entered the tent of the testimony and saw that Aaron’s staff, representing the house of Levi, had sprouted, formed buds, blossomed, and produced almonds!

Why did God choose an almond to sprout and not anything else?

The answer is found in Jeremiah 1:11-12 which says, 11 Then the word of the LORD came to me, asking, “What do you see, Jeremiah?” I replied, “I see a branch of an almond tree.” 12 The LORD said to me, “You have seen correctly, for I watch over my word to accomplish it.”

The sprouting of almond in the passage of Jeremiah reveals that God’s promises will be accomplished.

The almond in Aaron’s staff showed that God decision in choosing Aaron was final.

Aaron’s staff matured and produced a blessing that can be eaten to satisfy the hungry. Aaron didn’t do the work in producing the almond, but it was God. When the Lord uses us to do His will, spreading the Gospel, those who ingest God’s Word are satisfied, finding eternal life in Jesus Christ.

There are only two types of fruits, healthy ones that nourish the body and rotten ones that make the body sick. The weeds produce a fruit that destroys one’s healthy faith. The bad fruits are very difficult to spot. The closer we are to the truth through the study of God’s Word and building our life on it, the easier we can spot the rotten ones.

Don’t be a dried up staff, accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior who died in your place and rose from the grave victorious. Through Jesus Christ, you can become a blessing for others by directing them to the path of salvation.
